ACTIVE COMMUNITY TEAM - MEDIA RELEASE

WARD ONE ACT TEAM TO FOLLOW DAVE MARTIN'S LEAD

At the next Council election on September 14, a committed team will be following in the footsteps of Active Community Team Alderman Dave Martin. All candidates have pledged to carry on Alderman Martin's hard fought battle for a fair deal on rates, to have the community's views heard on council, and to ensure that sensitive issues are not buried.

KERRIE CHRISTIAN is ACT's No. 1 candidate in Ward One. A metallurgist, Kerrie has been a northern suburbs resident of Thirroul and Bulli for over 30 years. Since contesting the 1989 Council by-election where she was narrowly defeated by a Labour candidate, Kerrie, through her membership of the Community Alliance of Northern Suburbs, (CANS), has continued her commitment to the people and the environment of the northern suburbs.

During the 1989 by-election Kerrie campaigned strongly for changes to council rates. She continued that campaign when it became apparent that northern residents would face horrific rates bills in 1991, despite the poor services in the north.

KEN HARRISON of Helensburgh, is ACT's No.2 candidate in Ward One. A father of three, Ken is a computer electronics technician. Formerly of Otford, Ken has lived in Helensburgh since 1979. As a founding member of the Helensburgh District Protection Society (HDPS), he has worked to ensure the preservation of the unique environment and quality of life in the far northern suburbs. Ken has opposed the diversion of ratepayers funds to the Wollongong CBD, leaving northern areas neglected, with non-existent footpaths, substandard roads, drainage and flooding.

NORM ROBERTS, the ACT Team's No.3 candidate has lived in Thirroul for the past 20 years. Norm, as the father of six, has been involved in many local clubs and associations. Thus he is committed to improved recreational facilities free from admission charges. Norm is a solicitor in Thirroul.

The Active Community Ward One Team will work for commonsense, stability and proper management of Wollongong City Council, with Ward One representation on all issues. A fair share of resources to ensure basic services for the north without compromising the environment, protection of the escarpment and beaches will be key objectives.
