MEDIA RELEASE - WOLLONGONG COUNCIL TO CONSIDER COUNCIL OMBUDSMAN ROLE
Wollongong Council has resolved to consider the introduction of a Council Ombudsman to handle complaints and grievances from the community about council operations.
The proposal was one of several put by Cr Kerrie Christian to the first meeting of the new council, following the recent council elections.
"I believe that it is an important step in listening to the community,"stated Cr Christian, "other councils are looking at this type of ombudsman approach and there is no reason that Wollongong cannot also."
Council staff have been asked to look at the ombudsman model developed by Sutherland Shire Council, in addition to any others in operation and to report back to the Councillors.
Cr Christian also indicated that staff have been asked to report on the introduction of a 30 minute public forum at the start of each Council meeting.
"Other councils give members of the public the opportunity to address their Council at the council meeting," explained Cr Christian, "I believe that the Rockdale City Council model is one that might be followed by Wollongong."
Cr Christian also indicated that she was pleased with support from the incoming Lord Mayor regarding her proposal that all recently elected councillors endorse and personally sign the Charter of the People of Wollongong. The Charter was developed 2 years ago, following divisiveness which began to emerge in the community from the One Nation debates.
"Wollongong's people come many different backgrounds," stated Cr Christian, " and I believe that it is important that the councillors do commit to ensuring that everyone is treated fairly in the city regardless of their background."
