MEDIA RELEASE : NEW LAND VALUE INCREASES - MORE UPHEAVAL
The new land valuations are set to cause more upheaval in Wollongong's northern suburbs according to Ward One Councillor, Kerrie Christian.
"These new valuations will see all of the ratepayers in Ward One facing rate rises," stated Councillor Kerrie Christian, "more than $600,000 extra in rates will be collected from Ward One!"
"Ward One ratepayers alone will be paying for virtually half of the city to get a rate reduction," continued Councillor Christian, "it's pretty clear from a relatively simple analysis of a report provided to councillors by Finance staff from council."
Under legislation councils are obliged to use the most recent land valuations in setting council rates, and in the Wollongong Council area new valuations have been determined over the last 6-12 months.
"Something is very wrong when you have just 18% of the city's ratepayers funding cuts for 50% of the rest - especially when that 18% were already paying higher rates anyway," commented Councillor Christian.
"You also have to question a rating system that will give rate reductions to residents of suburbs such as Mt Pleasant, Mt Ousley, Balgownie, Cordeaux Hts & Keiraville; BUT virtually little or no reductions to Koonawarra, Cringila, Berkeley and Lake Heights," insisted Councillor Christian, "and of course most of the reductions are being subsidised by only Ward One residents."
Councillor Christian said it was clear that the current rating system needed a comprehensive review.
