ACTIVE COMMUNITY TEAM MEDIA RELEASE - 29/8/1995
ACTIVE COMMUNITY TEAM RUNS ITS OWN CAMPAIGN
It seems that from recent statements by the current lord mayor and his supporters that the ALP machine is anxious and determined to run not only their own campaign but also that of the Active Community Team according to Cr Christian, Active Community Team candidate for Lord Mayor and Ward One.
Cr Christian stated that the Active Community Team election campaign had been run according to their own timetable.
"We make no apology for inconveniencing the ALP and not conforming with their timetable!" stated Cr Christian, "our policies were released according to the time that we determined, which followed extensive community consultation to fine tune our draft policies.
"And we also make no apology for the Active Community Team actually carrying out our longstanding commitment to community consultation!" explained Cr Christian. Her comments follow recent criticisms by the current lord mayor that the Active Community Team has been carrying out too much community consultation - a criticism which has totally astonished the ACT Team.
"We have even been criticised for daring to allow our no.2 candidate to speak publically," commented Cr Christian, "I am delighted to be running with Dave Martin and Ross Dearden, two people of depth, substance, experience and commitment to the people of Wollongong,
Cr Christian questioned whether this was an indication of what could be expected of the future council if the ALP is successful in gaining both the lord mayoral position and all 12 positions on council, as they had hoped to do?
"Would such a council deal with the issues at council meetings or would the council meetings be merely a process of announcements and pronouncements?" queried Cr Christian.
