ACTIVE COMMUNITY TEAM - 1991 ELECTION CAMPAIGN MEDIA RELEASE

TOURISM - TIME TO SMARTEN UP OUR BEACHES FOR LOCALS & VISITORS

Tourism has been claimed to the Wollongong's economic saviour, but considerable efforts are still needed to smarten the city up.

"Particularly some of our northern beaches," explained Mrs Kerrie Christian, Active Community Team Ward One candidate in next Saturday's council elections, "they could really do with some work like planting of trees with improved car parking and picnic facilities."

"Unfortunately, our concept of tourism tends to be one of only being luxury, high-rise hotels and resorts," stated Mrs Christian.

However it is recognised by the tourism industry that occupancy rates in luxury hotels and on Queensland island resorts were dropping to alarming levels even before the airline pilots dispute several years ago. And at least 30 major tourist hotels have been in receivership around Australia over the last couple of years.

"Obviously we don't want Gold Coast style development on our beachfronts and we want any tourism type developments to be environmentally sensitive ," Mrs Christian emphasised,"but we need to do considerable work to maximise the tourism potential and job creation potential in this area."

" But sadly some of our beaches at our gateways in the north such as Coalcliff, Headlands and the northern end of Woonona, have been very neglected," Mrs Christian explained, "considerable landscaping, improved car parking and picnic facilities are needed."

The reality is that the South Coast's beaches have strong appeal for day trippers at the weekends and families on budgets from Sydney's south western suburbs, according to Mrs Christian.

Unfortunately this creates enormous pressures on the more attractive beaches such as Austinmer in the summer months, with many hundreds of daytrippers crowding the limited space.

"Our future in tourism lies in tapping into the people from that region and attracting them to the area," stated Mrs Christian," without alienating our local residents from being able to enjoy their own beaches."
