A Guide To Keeping Budgerigars
Assistance:- 
Ask for help and/or advice from the Secretary of the nearest club, a link to clubs is on the front page of this site, check for the location nearest you, and then contact their representative.

Buying budgerigars:-
Purchase only healthy stock from a breeder or a reputable trader.

Housing:-
Make sure you are able to provide adequate space and suitable housing, aviaries and cages, all of which must comply with local council and government requirements.

Feeding:-
Buy top quality seed only, that is clean and dry.
Suitable mixes are obtainable from seed suppliers, or you can mix to your own requirements. 
Advice is always available at the clubs.

Liquid:-
Always provide clean uncontaminated water.

Extras:-
Provide cuttlefish bone, shell-grit and coarse river sand to aid digestion.
Silver-beet, chickweed and other suitable green-feeds must be supplied regularly, but always wash these ingredients before use.

Breeding:-
Breeding appliances, such as breeding cages, nest boxes etc, are readily available from pet shops, or from other fanciers.

Identification:-
Leg rings to identify your birds and assist with record keeping are available from pet shops.
Coded leg rings are only available to registered members of the BCV, through your club

Illness:-
Information regarding illness can be obtained from other fanciers, including the name and address of your nearest Avian Veterinarian, or from the list of Vets on the Vets verdict page on this website.

Responsible caring ownership of budgerigars, whether for showing or just as a relaxing hobby, brings a great deal of pleasure.

Exhibition points of the budgerigar:-
The bird should be sleek and clean with no sign of injury or disease.
It should be perfectly balanced and steady on the perch at an angle of 30 degrees to the vertical.
Ideal length of bird is 225mm.
