A Real Fight - "Fighting Against Cancer"
By Will Hammond
Josh Haynes is the Full Contact Fighting Federation HWT Champ! He has stepped in to a MMA cage and walked out with the championship belt. THAT WAS EASY, compared to the fight he is in every single day, you see 6 months ago, Josh's 16 month old son Thor, was diagnosed with brain cancer. He immediately had to have a tumor removed from his brain, a cancerous growth 1/2 the size of man's fist was taken out, and Thor fought through it. Thor Haynes is a fighter just like his Dad, and so far has fought off the cancer, and continues to fight through the chemotherapy on a regular basis.

I met Josh Haynes in the locker-room the hours before we both made our debut fights, even though we are both heavyweights who were likely to face one another someday, we became fast friends. Josh has insurance, but even with insurance his share of the bills is already well over $300,000. A small price to pay for your son’s life, but a huge mounting bill none-the-less.

Anthony Hamlett (Former Hook & Shoot 145lbs Champ) has organized a fighting promotion to assist Josh's family through this financial hardship. "Fighting against Cancer" will be held February 15th at the Boys and Girls Center in Portland Oregon at (5250 NE MLK Jr Blvd). Fights will start at 7 pm sharp. 10% of the proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls Club, all the rest will go to the Haynes family. All fighters, judges, workers, etc. will be donating their time and their efforts that night. (NW fighters wishing to compete contact Anthony at ICEE138@AOL.COM

We are looking for sponsors and donations, we have a charity fund set up, and donations can be made through the PAY-PAL account ThorHaynes@charter.net All donor/sponsors over $100 will be recognized on a banner the night of the event!

If you are TIRED of hearing all the bad things about our sport, then this is a time to pull together, and give young Thor Haynes a chance to win a fight that we have all been lucky enough to avoid!

I look forward to hearing from you, Fight on!

Will "BIG Medicine" Hammond

I have two results of the fights from Saturday night here in Boise. Chris Kiever and Hank Weiss from the Orem Team both won. Hank won his match by choke submission 3 min 19 sec into the first round. Chris won his match by unanimous decision. Thanks to Paul Tom for this info.

I just got my DVD of the "Grappler's Quest West 2002" Saturday. The DVD was awesome! There were some great matches (22 to be exact!), especially the kids and women! It is well put together and was shipped lightning quick!!! I ordered it on Thursday, and it was at my house on Saturday! You can pick up a copy at www.shownopity.com

Well, I wish I could post the results from tonight's Octagon "Cage Fights" held here in Boise.  I will just post what my results were.  First, I should've done more research on the location.  My videographer friend and I were going to offer to tape the event, so him and I went looking for 1177 Wright St.  We drove to where it should've been and found 1190 (it was a nice, big warehouse).  Across the street from the warehouse were some shops.  We joked that the fights could be held in one of them.  This conversation trailed off to talk about Jean Claude in "Lionheart".

I purchased tickets from Gold's for my wife and me tonight and drove to the event.  Fights were at 7:30 and the doors opened at 6:30.  We got there a little before 7pm.  The amount of cars parked down a road and all over the place should've be the first flag up.  When we were walking, I told my wife about the joke about the shop and "Lionheart", but to my amazement  there was a line coming out the door of this 3 bay shop.  There had to be 300 people waiting.  So we waited too.  Soon, the event coordinators realized they need to get the ticket holders in and called us to the front.  The line was now split in half.  Half with tickets and half without.  We waited some more.  As we waited, I caught a look inside the shop.  I knew there was no way we were going to be sitting down, or even standing in the place!

After awhile, they announced that the event was "sold-out" and everyone without a ticket had to leave.  As soon as it was out of his mouth, I whirled around with my two tickets and shouted;  "Two tickets for sale!".  Soon, there were people trying to buy the tickets.  I said that I only wanted my $30 bucks for both tickets, but when the cash started coming out, I jumped on the opportunity to more than cut my losses.  I ended up selling both tickets for $65!

As we were leaving, more people were coming down the street!  I hope everything turned out ok and nobody was beat-up (other than the fighters!) or the shop burned down!  I sure hope the fighters got a take of the door money.  I think if the promoter has another event, he will hopefully have it somewhere bigger.  Please email me if you went and stayed.  I would like to do the fighters justice and post the results!

Dean's article is out! You can find Grappling at most Hastings or Fred Meyer's. It is an excellent article that focuses on what most people wonder about; "What do I do if I can't train with a Black Belt all the time?". Dean answers this question and gives solid advice on how to improve your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Dean is a very seasoned Brown Belt that breaks down information to the detail, this makes his teaching method easy to understand and quick to learn. Everyone that trains with Dean in the Twin Falls, Idaho area are very fortunate. If you can't find Grappling Magazine, email me and I can ship a copy to you ($6.29 + 1.50 S&H)
