Hi no Maru - The Ball of the Sun - Tokyo Japan [January 2004]
One of the cool things about Tokyo is that it is an urban jungle in every sense of the word. If you set off travelling in a particular direction (something I like to do) you come across all manner of strange and interesting and unexpected things, admidst repetitions of the drearily familiar: slightly robotic looking residential apartment blocks for example, skyhigh pencil-thin car parking lots, freeways, and so on.
Today (January 2 2004) I set off walking from my house near Ueno, and after 2 hours or so wandering I came upon Ogubashi, on the banks of the Arakawa River. On the way, near Nishi Nippori, I witnessed this street, adorned with the Japanese flag -- the "hi no maru" ("circle of the sun").
