代わり // k a w a r i
I SEEM TO BE GOING THROUGH A GROWTH SPURT WHEN IT COMES TO LEARNING JAPANESE, AND I LOOK FORWARD TO THE DAY WHEN I SPEAK IT FLUENTLY. One of the words I have picked up recently (January 2004), is 代わり, kawari, meaning "substitute; second helping of food; exchange."

For example:

1. お代わり!
Okawari!
A refill! (of beer -- said to a waiter or waitress in a bar or restaurant.)

2. その代わりに.
Sono kawari ni.
In exchange for this or that.

3. 新規、即解約。携帯をデジカメ代わりに使う若者たち.
...Keitai wo dejikame kawari ni tsukau
