Insulins Commonly Used


There are several commonly used insulins, both short-acting and long-acting. Some of these produced by Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk include:

HUMALOG: Very rapid-acting, can start working in 15 minutes, usually peaking between 1 and 2 hours. It should be totally gone in 4 hours.
REGULAR: Usually starts working between 30 and 60 minutes. Peaks between 2 and 4 hours, and gone between 4 and 8 hours.
NPH: Starts working between 2 and 4 hours, peaks between 6 and 8 hours. It should be out of a patient's system between 12 and 15 hours after the injection.
LENTE: Starts working in about 1-2 hours, peaking between 6 and 12 hours. It is usually gone between 18 and 24 hours.
ULTRALENTE: Kicks in after about 4-6 hours, with a very small peak between 8 and 15 hours after injection. It is gone between 18 and 24 hours.

VELOSULIN BR: Buffered regular insulin designed specifically for use in pumps, created by Novo.
