Legend of the Five Rings is a strategy based game that takes place in the fictional Rokugan Empire. The Rokugan setting is inspired by feudal Japan, with influences of other cultures throughout Asia, and elements of mythology and fantasy from those cultures. Over the course of several years, Charles has done many kinds of images for this game, but he is best known for his artwork for the Stronghold, Holding, and Region cards, which feature architecture and exotic environments throughout the Rokugan.
The art below represents my most recent work on the game, followed by architectural and environmental pieces grouped alphabetically according to the game's 9 clans. Each clan represents a distinct culture with unique visual characteristics.

CRAB CLAN
The Crab are fierce warriors known for the brute strength, endurance, and direct approach. They live in a region besieged by the forces of darkness, and their culture is one of constant warfare.
CRANE CLAN
The Crane are artists, poets, and diplomats - masters of all the courtly arts. Theirs is a culture of balance, restraint, and finery.
DRAGON CLAN
The Dragon live in the mountains, apart form the other clans, where they can pursue all matters spiritual and some martial.
LION CLAN
Of all the clans, the Lion are the most traditional. Their culture is defined by honor.
MANTIS CLAN
The Mantis live nearest to the sea and some might call them pirates. They are travelers and explorers, with some of the most highly skilled archers among their ranks.
PHOENIX CLAN
The Phoenix are a people of fire and magic. They live in harmony with the earth and often build within the forests of their homeland.
SCORPION CLAN
The Scorpion live and fight within the shadows. They are masters of deceit and illusion, though they are loyal to the Empire.
SPIDER/SHADOWLANDS CLAN
Evil and corruption incarnate. Demons, monsters, and fallen Samurai populate these dark and forsaken lands.
UNICORN CLAN
A people of the winds and the open land, the Unicorn are nomadic masters of horsemanship. They are fierce and swift moving, and their wide ranging culture brings them into contact with gaijin from outside the Empire.
RONIN/NON-ALIGNED/MISCELLANEOUS
Beyond the 9 Major Clans, there are many non-aligned forces in the Emerald Empire. They represent all kinds of people, factions, and locations.
