Misty of Chincoteague tells the story of the wild mare Phantom and her filly foal, Misty. The book opens with the description of how ponies first arrived on Assateague Island long ago. Twenty ponies from a shipwrecked Spanish galleon that was on its way to Peru swam for their lives and arrived on the shores of Assateague. They adapted to their new environment and over time became wild and free. The Phantom is a descendant of these ponies and roams free on Assateague. The book describes how Paul and his sister Maureen from neighboring Chincoteague Island become committed to owning this beautiful wild mare and her foal and what they do to capture and tame them. All the incidents and characters in the book are based on actual events and real people.
Misty of Chincoteague is an enthralling story, told in a vividly descriptive and realistic way. It has been a favorite with horselovers for many years and even after more than fifty years since it was written has not lost its appeal. Marguerite Henry has written several good horse books, but this would have to be one of the most loved. It is accompanied by wonderful illustrations by Wesley Dennis, which add to the atmosphere. Misty of Chincoteague is a Newbery Honor Book and deserves a place on every horselover's bookshelf.
