Horse Mania Newsletter #20
April 12th 2000
Subscriber Count: 701

************************************************************
The NEXT deadline for ALL article writers and things submitted to the
newsletter is April 27th. Please let me know if you cannot meet this
deadline for some reason.
************************************************************

Hello, everyone!

Welcome to issue twenty, and a special welcome to all our new
subscribers- we’re over the 700 mark! I’m very sorry to anyone who
received last issue as a download or attachment. I was lazy and didn’t
send it out in two parts like I usually it was too big and some email
servers received it as an attachment instead of normal email like it
should be. I promise I’ll always send it out in two parts from now on!
This issue is missing a few of the normal columns so it’s a bit shorter
than usual. And there are three positions open in the “Wanted” column! If
you’re interested in writing a regular column for Horse Mania, please take
a look at them and get those applications in as soon as possible! I’d like
to get those columns filled quickly.
The deadline for issue number 21 is later than usual because I’ll be away
on holiday for a week. So it is very important that you send in your
articles and contributions as EARLY AS YOU CAN so I can just quickly put
it together and send it out when I get back home. I won’t be able to chase
up any column writers so please, please get them in on time. Thanks! I’m
away on holiday from April 22nd to April 29th so I won’t be replying to
emails during that time. You can still send me things though, and I’ll
reply to everything as soon as I get back.
Congratulations to everyone whose site won a Horse Mania Excellent Horse
Webpage Award in March!! There is a list of the winners in this issue.
NOTE: I have changed the design of the awards, if you received the old
award design and would like to exchange it for the new one, just email me
and I’ll give you the URL for the new one! You can view the new award
designs at https://www.angelfire.com/id/horsemania/winaward.html I plan to
sort through all the award applications I have received in the next week,
I’m sorry it’s taking me a while to reply!
One last thing; there’s a new feature poll for April on the Horse Mania
main page- http://horsemania.cjb.net so if you haven’t already, stop by
and vote! Okay, that’s it from me for now. I hope you enjoy this issue and
I’ll see you again soon! As usual any criticism, comments or suggestions
are welcome.

See you next issue,

Susan

DERBY HOPEFULS TO WATCH
============================================================
Well, we've got one more explosion before the brief hush that
will fall on the Kentucky Derby trail next weekend. Because
of the scheduling, there is a rare week break between the
Spiral Stakes and the Santa Anita Derby. With so many
exciting prospects dashing and smashing their way into the
Derby picture recently, the last thing anyone wants now is
for it to stop for an entire week. But stop it will, so it's
best to soak up enough sunshine from this weekend's
festivities to get you through the gloom of the following
week's inactivity.
Highlighting the action will be Saturday's $600,000 Spiral
Stakes at Turfway Park, where a diverse assortment of horses
from across the country try to get one step closer to
Churchill Downs. And it's going to have to be a pretty big
step. Also carded for Saturday is the Rebel Stakes at
Oaklawn, the Rushaway Stakes on the Spiral undercard, and the
Private Terms at Laurel.
With no real standout in the Spiral, this is a good spot for
promising, but inexperienced, horses such as Rollin with
Nolan and Runspastum to show that they're ready to go to the
next level. Rollin with Nolan looks to be Nick Zito's last
hope to make it to Churchill Downs with a contender, and
judging from what we've seen in his last two races, this is a
colt with an enormous amount of talent. If he can somehow
show that he's willing to settle behind horses and switch
leads, there's no telling what he can accomplish. The son of
Summer Squall has already shown that he's got what it takes
inside by battling gamely to the wire in an allowance race on
Jan. 29, finishing in a three-horse photo with two seasoned
stakes performers, Polish Miner and Wayward Ways. He came
back to wire an allowance field on Feb. 19, defeating
eventual Tampa Bay Derby winner Wheelaway by 2 1/4 lengths.
But both times he was going full-out on the lead, and in the
stretch he refused to switch over to his right lead despite
the vigorous efforts last time out by jockey Corey Nakatani.
It's more important for Rollin with Nolan to run like a Derby
horse Saturday than it is for him to win. If he can manage to
do both then we've got ourselves yet another exciting star in
the making.
Runspastum is another colt with a ton of ability, but he
hasn't faced the caliber of horses Rollin with Nollin has,
and he too has shown he likes it on the lead and is not good
about changing leads. He also ran very greenly in his last
start, ducking in a couple of times and running with his head
cocked to the inside. But he's won his last two races by a
combined margin of almost 16 lengths, and he is a good-moving
horse. His pedigree is awesome for 1 1/4 miles, so if he
shows he can compete with these horses and be somewhat
professional about it, he should only get better as the
distances stretch out.
Kenny McPeek looks to hold a fairly strong hand in the Spiral
with Nature, a powerful son of Valiant Nature who looked very
impressive winning the Battaglia Memorial after fanning
7-wide turning for home and charging by the leaders to win
going away. He's taken a long time to find himself, and now
it's time to find out if he can keep it up against far better
horses than he faced last time. McPeek also will run Deputy
Warlock, who is coming off two disappointing efforts at
Gulfstream. We gave this colt a good chance to hit the board
in the Florida Derby, but McPeek admits he didn't do enough
with him, which makes sense, considering he originally was
planning on waiting until the Spiral. After mapping out a
horse's schedule on the Derby trail, sudden last-minute
changes normally never prove successful. So, if the colt can
handle coming back in two weeks, he certainly has the class
and experience to make amends and be right there at the
finish. Of course, then he has to come back in three weeks
again, and three weeks after that for the Derby. But he
really hasn't done much running yet. He's a far better horse
than he's showed.
The hard-hitting Archer City Slew will provide a good gauge
as to the merits of some of the Southern California horses,
namely War Chant and Cocky, while Globalize will try to boost
the reputation of the Northern California horses. Then we
have Elliott Walden trying one last time to come up with a
Derby horse, as he sends out Elite Mercedes, who tries to
rebound from a dismal effort in the Florida Derby, and
Gateman, an intriguing English-bred who has won the Hopemont
Stakes at Keeneland and was third in the Palm Beach at
Gulfstream, but has never raced on dirt. One thing we do like
is the fact that he won by 15 lengths at Chester in England,
a track with turns so sharp they make Turfway Park look like
Belmont. We like the fact that he's inbred 4x5 to Ribot on
his dam side. The only smidgen of dirt in the pedigree is
2-year-old champ Successor in his fourth generation. As for
Elite Mercedes, he's shown enough promise to make us believe
the Florida Derby was an aberration. A gorgeous gray with a
beautifully chiseled head, he surely is one of the most
appealing-looking 3-year-olds. Although his sire did win the
Florida Derby, his dosage is a lofty 11.00 if you're looking
ahead to 1 1/4 miles.
One horse who had been scheduled to run in the Spiral,
Unshaded, will now probably point for the Flamingo Stakes.
This is one of the most exciting prospects we've seen this
year, but trainer Carl Nafzger is not going to rush him to
make the Derby. He's a long, lanky gelding whose best days
are probably down the road. Nafzger wants to make sure he's
at his best in the morning before throwing him to the wolves.
It won't take him long to become one of the wolves himself --
it's just a question of when. If he does run in the Flamingo
on April 8, that leaves him with 4 weeks to the Derby without
ever having run against any of the top contenders.
In the Rushaway, for horses not quite ready to meet this
caliber of competition, we've been waiting for Naval Hero, a
son of Sea Hero, to show what he's made of. We were very
impressed with his maiden victory back on Jan. 15, but his
two subsequent starts have been disappointing. We're not
quite ready to give up on him, and look for him to finally
put it all together over a different surface. He'll have to
beat the solid stakes horse Graeme Hall and another nice colt
in Advanced Edition, who has shown flashes of brilliance in
the past.--Steve Haskin
============================================================
WIDE-OPEN REBEL
============================================================
Saturday's Rebel Stakes is anyone's race to win, with
Afternoon Affair trying to duplicate his Southwest
performance and Big Numbers looking for that extra distance
of ground. The horse to watch, however, is Snuck In, who was
forced to miss the Risen Star at Fair Grounds last month.
This is a talented, consistent colt who has already won at
Churchill Downs, Calder and Sam Houston, and at distances of
5 1/2, 6, and 7 furlongs and 1 1/16 miles. His narrowest
margin of victory has been 2 3/4 lengths. He hasn't run in
over three months, so there's no telling if he's ready to win
this. If he does or is right there at the finish, he's going
to take an awful lot of beating in the Arkansas Derby.
============================================================
MALEK DRAWS OUTSIDE IN WORLD CUP
============================================================
American-based Malek drew the outside post position in the
14-horse field that will contest Saturday's $6-million Dubai

Sheba Racecourse. Malek will be ridden by Alex Solis while
his stablemate, Puerto Madero under Laffit Pincay Jr., will

ARCHER CITY SLEW FAVORED IN SPIRAL
============================================================
San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) winner Archer City Slew drew the
nine post position as he was installed the 5-2 morning-line
favorite for Saturday's Spiral Stakes (gr. II) at Turfway
Park. Trained by Vladamir Cerin, Archer City Slew will be
ridden by Garrett Gomez in place of Chris Antley, who is not
riding this week, according to information received by the
trainer. A field of 11 is scheduled to go postward in the
Spiral, which will be televised by the ABC network from
4:00-4:30 p.m. (EST) as part of the "Road to the Visa Triple
Crown" series.
The field for the 1 1/8-mile race formerly known as the Jim

RED BULLET TAKES GOTHAM IN STAKES DEBUT
============================================================
Stronach Stable's undefeated Red Bullet, bet down to 15-1 in
the second pool of the Kentucky Derby futures wagering,
delivered his first stakes win Sunday at Aqueduct, defeating
a fast-closing Aptitude by a half-length in Sunday's Gotham
Stakes (gr. III).

THE DEPUTY WORKS TOWARD SANTA ANITA DERBY
============================================================
Kentucky Derby hopeful The Deputy worked Wednesday at Santa
Anita Park and turned in a time of 1:00 1/5 over five
furlongs under jockey Chris McCarron. Trainer Jenine Sahadi
praised the effort in preparation for the April 8 Santa Anita
Derby (gr. I). "He worked great," Sahadi said. "He was just
going nice and easy." Although The Deputy finished second to
Fusaichi Pegasus in the San Felipe Stakes on March 19, Sahadi
said the horse is sharp and ready to run. "He probably needed
the race," she said. "I think he'll move forward off that
effort. If he does, then we'll be in good shape."
Dixie Union, preparing for his sophomore debut, also worked
at Santa Anita, going four furlongs in 48 seconds flat for
trainer Richard Mandella. At Gulfstream Park on Wednesday,
Scottish Halo worked five furlongs in 1:00 4/5 while Remember
Sheikh, winner of the March 11 El Camino Real Derby (gr.
III), went seven furlongs in 1:29 1/5 at Golden Gate Fields.

TOP JAPANESE JOCKEY TO RIDE IN U.S.
============================================================
According to the Japanese newspaper Sports Nippon, that
country's 30-year-old leading jockey Yutaka Take is planning
to leave Japan and ride in the U.S. for a year. According to
the report, Take will complete his racing in Japan in June.
Following the Yasuda Memorial Stakes, Take will relocate to
the West Coast to ride at Santa Anita, Del Mar, and Hollywood
Park. While in the U.S., Take will ride in Japan and Europe
on some occasions.
Take (pronounced TAH-kay) has consistently been Japan's
leading rider since his arrival on the scene in 1987, when he
won the "rookie" riding title and became a teen idol. The
jockey has won every major race in the country, and last
November captured Japan's most important international race
when he rode Special Week to victory in the Japan Cup
(Jpn-I).
============================================================
LUKAS OUTLINES PLANS FOR CONTENDERS
============================================================
D. Wayne Lukas has firmed up his schedule for his five
Kentucky Derby contenders, and it looks as if it's going to
be a busy month of April for the Hall of Fame trainer,
according to The Blood-Horse's Steve Haskin. Lukas' road to
Louisville begins April 8 when he sends his star filly
Surfside against the boys in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I).
Although she's had to work for her last two victories, Lukas
said, "I asked myself before these races, are there any
fillies out here who can beat her? And my answer was 'no.' So
why should I have her keep winning by seven lengths and use
her up in these races?"
Then comes the big weekend of April 15, when Lukas will send
out High Yield in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I),
Exchange Rate in the Wood Memorial (gr. II), and True
Confidence in the Arkansas Derby (gr. II). Although Exchange
Rate seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle, Lukas feels
he's going to very dangerous, especially considering he came
out of the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) with a lung infection and
worked a sharp five furlongs in :59 4/5 Tuesday morning.
Lukas said he's close to naming a rider. "There are three
top-class riders who are trying to get the mount, and I'll
probably make a decision tomorrow (Wednesday)," Lukas said.
As for High Yield, Lukas said the Fountain of Youth winner is
doing great, and noted that the "sheets guys all have him
targeted."
Finally, Lukas will run Commendable in the Lexington Stakes
(gr. II) the following weekend, and has named Pat Day to
ride. Lukas told Haskin they've been teaching the son of Gone
West to relax all winter, and weren't happy to see him on the
lead in the San Felipe in fractions of :22 and change and :45
and change.
============================================================
IRISH-BASED COLT POSSIBLE FOR DERBY
============================================================
Mull of Kintyre, the $1-million yearling purchase who
finished fourth in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr.
I), could return to the U.S. for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I),
according to his Irish-based trainer Aidan O'Brien. In
outlining plans for his stable in 2000, O'Brien said Mull of
Kintyre is the most likely of all the 3-year-olds in his barn
to return to the States for the season's first classic,
according to the Racing Post.
The newspaper quoted O'Brien as saying, "If we do have a
runner in the Kentucky Derby, this fellow would be the most
likely one. He has experience on the dirt, having run fourth
in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and he's working well. Where
he starts off will depend on whether we take the Kentucky
option. One of the Guineas is another alternative for him."
A Kentucky-bred son of Danzig produced from the Easy Goer
mare Retrospective, Mull of Kintyre races for Michael Tabor
and Mrs. John Magnier.
============================================================
DUBAI MILLENNIUM 'AWESOME' IN WORLD CUP
============================================================
Dubai Millennium, called by Sheikh Mohammed as possibly the
best horse he has ever owned, ran away with the $6-million
Dubai World Cup, going right to the front at the start, then
merely galloping a top international field into the dust,
winning by a wide margin. Behrens, a multiple grade I winner
trained by H. James Bond, was the best of the American hopes
in the international field of 13 (after the defection of
Malek due to injury). Behrens tried to make a run at Dubai
Millennium once the field straightened away in the stretch,
but he was no match for the winner while the best of the also
rans under Jorge Chavez. Third was Bobby Frankel-trained
Public Purse, who was ridden by Corey Nakatani. Fourth was
another American-based horse, Puerto Madero, trained by
Richard Mandella and ridden by Laffit Pincay. The
track-record setting performance of 1:59 2/5 was all the more
impressive, considering that jockey Frankie Dettori eased up
on the colt in the final yards of the 10-furlong dirt race.
"It was surely awesome," Mandella said after the race.
A typically jubilant Dettori concurred with Sheikh Mohammed's
assessment of the horse, calling him the best horse he has
ever ridden. Hoisting the winning jockey's trophy, a gold
whip, in the air, he proclaimed, "and for now on I'm going to
ride with this."
A 4-year-old by Seeking the Gold out of the Shareef Dancer
mare Colorado Dancer, Dubai Millennium was bred in England by
Sheikh Mohammed and races for his Godolphin Racing. He is
trained by Saeed bin Suroor. Dubai Millennium came into the
World Cup with just one career defeat-a ninth-place finish in
last year's Epsom Derby-in eight starts. He won a maiden race
by five lengths at two, and overpowered his competition in
each of his 3-year-olds starts, with the exception of the
Derby. In his final start of 1999, Dubai Millennium was six
lengths to the good in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot,
then scored by 4 1/2 in his first dirt race, a World Cup prep
at 1 1/4 miles on Feb. 26. American bettors made Dubai
Millennium the favorite and received a $4.40 payoff for a $2
win wager.
Ecton Park finished a troubled fifth, according to jockey
Chris McCarron. "He was right up there and was shuffled back
to last. If he had an outside draw he could have been second
or third." Completing the order of finish were World Cleek,
Running Stag, Indigenous, Lear Spear, Saint's Honor, Strudel
Fitz, Gracioso and Worldly Manner.
============================================================
DERBY HOPES SPIRAL UPWARD FOR GLOBALIZE
============================================================
Globalize, a disappointing fourth in the El Camino Real Derby
(gr. III) March 11, improved his chances for a berth in the
May 6, Kentucky Derby, in winning Saturday's Turfway Spiral
(gr. II), completing the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.16. Elite
Mercedes, a disappointment himself finishing 15 1/2-lengths
behind Hal's Hope in the Florida Derby, checked in 1
1/2-lengths behind the winner.

SEATTLE SLEW TO UNDERGO SURGERY
============================================================
Seattle Slew, the 26-year-old stallion who stands at Three
Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky., has a spinal cord compression
that will require surgery. According to an announcement from
the farm, the compression is due to arthritic changes in the
horse's vertebrae and has caused the neurological symptoms
that have bothered Seattle Slew this year. The compression
was detected Sunday when a myelogram was performed at the
Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital. In a memo to shareholders, the farm said
surgically fusing
the vertebrae involved was the unanimous recommendation of a
veterinary team led by Dr. Jim Morehead that also included
Drs. Bill Bernard, Norman Rantanen, Barry Grant, Joe Cannon,
and Terry Blanchard. "This procedure, although not without
risk, will hopefully ensure that Seattle Slew will be able to
live out his life safely and happily," the memo said. The
operation is tentatively scheduled for later this week.
On Friday, Three Chimneys Farm had notified Seattle Slew
syndicate members and season owners to consider other mating
plans for their broodmares as a result of an apparent
fertility problem being experienced by the horse.
According to the memo from Three Chimneys manager Dan
Rosenberg, Slew was successful in impregnating seven of the
first nine mares bred to him this year. However, none of the
next eight mares conceived and "a complete semen analysis
confirms that his fertility has been seriously compromised,"
Rosenberg said in the memo.

REWIND: THE REFRIGERATOR CHALLENGE
**********************************************************************
After a traumatic head injury claimed the life of a Quarter Horse racing
star, Refrigerator, his owners are hoping to prevent similar tragedies by
establishing a research endowment to study equine head injuries in his
name.
The only racing Quarter Horse to earn more than $2 million, Refrigerator
captured 10 championship titles in five years at the track. After his
retirement from racing, Refrigerator was being prepared for a second
career
as a roping horse when he suffered a devestating head injury in February
1999.
Six months after the eleven-year-old as euthanized, his owners, Jim and
Marilyn Helzer, decided the best way to honor Refrigerator was to work to
protect other horses from a similar fate.
Working with the AQHA's Equine Research Committee, the Helzers established
"The Refrigerator Challenge" to raise money for head- trauma research. The
Helzers will match any dollar amount to the fund, up to $200,000 a year
for
the next five years. According to the AQHA, donations are already being
made
and specific fund-raising events are being planned for the near future.
All
the money raised will go directly to the studies of equine head trauma.
Another victim of the fate of head traumas is a chestnut Thoroughbred
filly,
Three Ring. Three Ring raced in the Kentucky Derby last year. Three Ring's
promising career and life was cut short as she reared up and hit her head
in
a barn and fractured her skull. The chestnut filly, a horse obsereved by
Barbara Livingston, will forever be remembered by all. Three Ring and
Refrigerator will never be forgotten. *

*BREEDS IN FOCUS by Jacqui
-------------------

The Dartmoor Pony

Origin: This breed originated on the rough moorland of the Dartmoor
Forest.
The Dartmoor Pony has been influenced by many breeds. There is an early
connection with the Old Devon Pack Horse and the Cornish Goonhilly Pony,
both of which are now extinct. In the nineteenth century, Roadsters,
Welsh
Ponies, Welsh Cobs, Exmoors, Arabians, Shetlands, and small Thoroughbreds
also influenced this breed.

History: These ponies almost became extinct during World War Two and were
saved by the National Pony Society. There is not much to this breeds
history, except for many experiments on the crossings of different breeds.

Use: The Dartmoor is a very elegant riding horse and, along with the Welsh
Ponies, it dominates the show ring. It also has amazing potential over
fences, although they are bred for flashiness, rather than for jumping.
This breed is very popular in Europe and is on it's way throughout the U.S.

Action: The Dartmoor's action is notable among the pony breeds for lack of
knee lift. It is low, long, and economical, typical hack or riding action.

Color: Bay, black, and brown are common, and paints are not accepted by
the
breed registry which discourages any white markings.

Height: Does not exceed 12.2 hands.

Conformation: The excellence of this breed's conformation gives the
Dartmoor
a natural balance. The neck is strong, with a gracefully set head, which
is
"pure pony." The head is small, full of quality, with very small and
alert
ears. The loin and hind leg are exceptionally correct, and the limbs and
hooves are extraordinary. The cannon is short and the bone measurement is
ample.

All in all, this breed is very wonderful and VERY beautiful.
Temperament: The Dartmoor has an excellent disposition and makes the
ideal
child's pony.

If you would like to suggest a breed to be profiled in Breeds In Focus,
please email Jacqui at perfectnote@hotmail.com with your suggestion.

*THE NAME GAME by Megan
---------------

Hey everybody!  First of all, I'd like to thank everybody for sending me
in their names, for the Arab stud.  They were all really good and I had a
hard time choosing a winner.  In the end though, the winner I picked for
this horse, was "Special Presentation," sent in to me by Amanda.  I think
it really suits him, so thanks!!

Now for this weeks horse.   Today we have a baby to name!!  It's just that
time of year, again!!   The mares at the barn where I board, have already
started!!  Two of the pony mares have foaled, and we have 1 more pony,
and 2 horses all due within a couple of months !!  Sadly, :(, we lost the
one foal, but he was premature...

Anyway, sorry, I'll get on with the column.  Now for this issues horse
(I've said that before though, haven't I?).  Sorry to say, we only have a
head and shoulders shot, for you to look at today.

Breed: unknown
Gender: colt
Age: 4 months
Colour/ Markings: steel grey, solid coloured
Sire: Turn of the Century
Dam: Forever Young
Photo: https://www.angelfire.com/id/horsemania/ng2.JPG

I can't wait for all of your replies, so start sending them in!! And
also, as a slightly new thing this year, being the start of the foaling
season, if any of you have mares who've already foaled (or once they do
foal) and you'd like some help with the naming, you can send me a picture
(preferably a side view of the entire body, but it doesn't have to be) and
I'll feature it in one of the next columns. I'll still choose the name
that I think is best, from all the one's that get sent in, but I'll also
send you a list of all the names that get sent in, so you can see
everybody's suggestions. Hope to be hearing from you. Don't forget, my
email is srice@king.igs.net !!!   BYE!!!!!

*HORSE STORY: “PONY” (part 3) by Jewel Orion
------------

Here is our new horse story. This is the third part, and it will run for
five parts in future issues of Horse Mania! If you missed out on any parts
you can read them in the Horse Mania Archives starting with Newsletter
#18, at https://www.angelfire.com/id/horsemania/archives.html

PONY by Jewel Orion

Pony wasn't led back to the yards after the sale, but to a shiny trailer
that smelled of new straw. A man took the old, rough halter from his head,
and replaced it with a soft leather one. Then he ran a hand along the
pony's back until he came to the rash. He tut-tut-ted to himself, and
stroked the Pony gently down his nose saying, "You poor little man, what
have they done to you?"

He loaded the pony into the trailer and then drove slowly home to a farm.
Once there, he took the pony into a clean, gently lit stable and removed
the Halter. He left the stable, and returned a short time later with a
large, full haynet. Pony pricked his ears at the man, and gently poked his
nose forward, as if he expected to get hit for being so bold. The man
murmured encouraging words and the pony was soothed and stood munching.
The man tied the haynet to the wall and went away again. Pony was halfway
through the hay when the man reappeared, and began to gently sponge Pony's
back where the rash was. Pony knew, somehow, that the man was trying to
help, and he stood still, content to munch the hay and let the kind man
sponge his back. The man finished and then applied some ointment to the
rash. It was the most soothing thing Pony had ever felt in his hard, short
little life. Pony sighed deeply, and the man chuckled gently and said,
"There Lad, doesn't that feel better." Pony couldn't understand the man,
but he knew by his tone that he could be trusted. The man put a soft pad
on Pony's back, then rugged him up in the softest rug for the night. Pony
had never been so well treated in his life! The man gathered his tools,
and left the Pony in peace for the night.

Pony's retraining began the next day. A new, older man came to his stable
and hung up a nice fresh haynet. But unlike the night before, the old man
just stood beside the haynet, instead of leaving Pony to eat. Pony looked
hungrily at the hay, but he remembered that his last owner had played
cruel, painful tricks on him before when he has seemed too eager to get to
his food in the past. So they stood that way for a while, the pony
snuffling and staring at the hay, the old man standing quietly and waiting
patiently.

Finally, Pony was too hungry and stepped warily forward toward the hay. He
grabbed a mouthful and the man just stood. This encouraged Pony, and he
grabbed another mouthful. As he did this, the man reached out a hand, and
Pony, expecting pain to start, shied away. But the man just stood still
again. Pony stretched his neck out to the hay again, and the man started
talking gently to him. Pony found this soothing, and allowed the man to
reach out a hand. The man gently stroked and petted Pony's neck and face,
and quietly removed some of the burrs from his mane, talking all the while.
Lesson number one was over, and Pony had passed with flying colours.

Pony liked the old man and, day by, day turned back into the bold, perky
pony he had once been. The man was too large to ride Pony, so when Pony's
back had healed, the old man's niece, Sunni rode Pony in all his lessons.
Sunni was a kind, gentle girl, and far from dreading the day, Pony began
to look for her every morning. Together they became more and more trusting
with one another, and Pony's progress came along in leaps and bounds. Pony
loved to jump, and so it was decided that Sunni would train him some more,
then take him to a local show in two week's time.

To be continued…
