The American Civil War, 1861-5
The slavery question, as Thomas Jefferson called it, was always one of the greatest issues confronting American statesmen. With the sudden aquisition of former Mexican territory the fate of those new lands was paramount. During the 1850s the rhetoric of politicians and clergy grew increasingly heated. Many southern politicians began to feel a new Southern nationalism. In 1860 southern Democrats intentionally split their party, assuring the victory of Abraham Lincoln in that year's presidential election. This built the popular support they needed for an attempt at secession from the Union.
This greatest of American wars has been well covered by figure manufacturers. There are nearly two dozen different sets available for building ACW armies.
