Posted July 7th, 1999. By Lord Ardyn. The Undeniable Charm of Might and Magic Certainly, MM7 has its drawbacks. There are valid criticisms that can be made. But, I have a strange feeling that for most of us, when MM8 comes out - we'll be out there buying it again. This is because we are truly twisted individuals - we're the true masochists of the CRPG industry. This isn't a criticism, rather I think it's a matter of pride. Through seven titles we have endured - and will continue to do so. The quirks we complain about are all part of the charm… I mean, only in a MM game can you:
2. Fight an epic battle right alongside a host of NPC allies, sharing in acts of bravery and high adventure. Followed by NPC genocide after you hit the 'a' key one too many times, plug one of them with an arrow just ONCE - and they all go red, screaming for your blood. 3. Fly madly across territories, fleeing monsters you have no chance against. Flipping them the one fingered salute as you float nimbly by…. Only to run smack dab into a zone border, around which the monsters have congregated in epic numbers, while you are forced to drop among them, hoping for the "Do you wish to leave?" message before eradication ensues. 4. Site as a legal reason for divorce - "I couldn't help myself, all those late nights, I HAD to find all the obelisks and decipher the message… The GREATEST TREASURE IN THE WORLD IS OUT THERE!! It..it..it.. It's under a rock in the desert.. No wait -on an island at midnight!!!" (insert guys in white suits here) 5. Get *##!'d up in so many ways - Weakness, Paralyzation, Zombification, Insanity, Stoning (woo!), Poison and if that's not enough, Eradication - suck it up! (Is it just me, or do the characters generally look "cooler" when they are insane?) 6. Get more than thirty quests piled up in your notes in the first town, fifteen of which you wont be able to do for 40 or 50 levels, ten of which are scattered on other sides of the continent, four of which you could do if you could just FIND them, and one that you can find but you can't do because the quest item isn't where it should be until the game gets patched - muhahaha. 7. Spend countless hours delving through deep dungeons, epic landscapes, discovering fantastic treasures and lost relics - experiencing the ultimate fantasy adventure.... Only to end up battling it out with metal robots, flying sentries, blaster wielding cyborgs and futuristic death machines. After which either you, the bad guys, or the world tend to disengage and blast into deep space… 8. Think you are cool like Fonzie (ala 'Happy Days' for the older crowd) or Dawson (ala 'Dawson's Creek' for the younger crowd) when you figure out that if you get the fly scroll from clicking on a blank wall in New Sorpigal, fly up the the second story of a building, click on yet another blank wall, you will be teleported to a mystical dungeon where - if you can get by sixty dragons, you can click on another blank wall for an awesome stat boosts and yet ANOTHER blank wall to travel to the NWC Dungeon with lots of nifty treasure and items - woo! 9. Spend days upon days waiting on a stable or a boat to take you to the place you NEED to go.. And hoping and praying with all your might that someone far more anal then you will put the bloody travel schedules on a web page soon - because there isn’t a single soul in town that knows where those horses or boats are going to go today! 10. Over the course of several games wait for the same old travel spells like fly and town portal only to find (yet again) that there are STILL places to high to fly over and town portal STILL doesn't go everywhere you want it to go - yes! (This entire piece is really intended to be humorous, to poke fun at some of the experiences we have all had playing Might and Magic. In all seriousness, my hat is off to NWC for sticking it out - for telling their story, and for creating the most enduring work in the history of CRPGs. Well done guys, cant wait for MM8). |
