Sleeping off our Resolutions
Lifetime at nine and a half
waking up from insomnia
on lurid Sunday
afternoon Friday mornings
(the
daylight's
defeatist smile)
Watching our loved ones
sleep through the year
tranquilized by eleven
and a half
(they
missed the
change)
One by one they rise
and tip-toe down the
stairs
at nine ten and twelve
they descend
(from
last year's
ascension)
Asleep before the stars
I was awake(and I
saw them)
disappear
How can I sleep again
knowing they are
gone
absent
Can they forget the years
and remember the new
one
waking up to promise
or promised?
(sleeping through
their resolutions)
Forgetting the secrets
they've known since one
and a half
whispered by their
silhouettes
(courageous
in darkness)
Lifetime at twelve and a half
smiling but sleepless
and slowly closing my
eyes
(can I
forget the years?)
