There are only a few personalities that have always been easily identified. Jesus Christ, Santa Claus, Robin Hood and of course Dracula. The familiar long black coat, the tall stance, the piercing eyes, sometimes brown sometimes blue and sometimes red! Oh yes and let's not forget the teeth, for what is Dracula without his teeth? Bare gums hardly evoke an imagery of terror now do they, ( unless you're a dentist!). Oi! That's my bird your biting in to!
Bite me baby! Of course there have been many people who have played Dracula, but my favourites have to be Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee and Gary Oldman. Lee is Dracula, or should I say, how I see Dracula. Suave, sophisticated, and yet somehow very alien and cold. Lee neither portrayed him as a cheap villain or a dastardly deviant, he gave him a sense of melancholy even to the extent of being full of internal torment and haunted by things not known by modern thinkers.
However, vampirism = sex! And the film makers knew this only too well. What better compliments to the masculine sexuality of Dracula than to give him servile, lustful and predatorial vamps. There must be some Freudian meaning behind the she-vampire, possibly even way back to the myth of Lillith, but Ingrid Pitt certainly had what it took to fill me with desire! Woohoo! Ooh what a nice pair ( of teeth! )
There are of course numerous Vampire films to write about but I would just like to tell you a bit about my Top Ten Vamp Movies:
