Cuddling
Her head hurt. And there was a buzzing sound in her ear that was irritating her. She groaned, her eyes still closed. ‘It was gonna be one of those days.’ Her whole body gave her the signals of a bad hangover that would probably ruin the day ahead.
Someone blew in her ear and she froze. Only then did she realize that she was not alone. Her eyes opened slowly. Two large arms encircled her and held her protectively.
‘Mulder!’ Her eyes widened as flashbacks of the night before reeled in her mind. Charity Gala, Mulder was a slave, she bought him, Ellen’s party, Mulder doing his ‘thing’ and she was dead drunk.
Then, Mulder moved and gently cupped her left breast with his right hand. She gasped softly at the gesture, half outraged, half surprised. She wondered if he were asleep.
"Baby, you smell so good." She heard him mumble in her ear.
‘Okay….’ He’s definitely still sleeping. No way would he consciously dare call her that. She tried to calm herself down. She’d let him off this time. Just play it cool, nudge him awake and pretend nothing happened.
Her resolve fell apart when he started licking and nibbling her ear. The sensation was too heavenly that she let him. Her heartbeat doubled and soon tripled when he shifted beneath her, allowing her to feel his obvious hard-on against her thigh. She ignored the warning sirens blaring in her head and indulged herself with him. But like all good things had to end, he mumbled again. "Baby…. mmmm"
‘Ugh! That did it!’ She sighed. ‘Baby’ was undoubtedly the number one turn-off on her list. She nudged him hard in the ribs.
"Wh…at?" He woke up in a start.
She took a deep breath and told him sweetly. "Mulder, would you mind removing your hand from my breast?"
Mulder frowned. His head weighed a ton. He could hear Scully telling him to remove his hand from her….. what?!? His eyes bulged and he grimaced. ‘Uh-oh.’
"Mulder, did you hear what I just said?" She asked him again when he didn’t respond.
He opened his mouth to answer but nothing came out. Unwittingly, he squeezed her breast gently to prove to himself that his hand was indeed where she said it was. At the motion, Scully widened her eyes and hissed even louder. "Mulder!?!"
He let her go abruptly and this time his voice worked. "Sorry…. I…I…Drunk. Right, I was totally drunk Scully. Honest, I didn’t know what I was doing. My brain was clouded. Totally out of it."
She decided to drop the matter. Her head was too painful to even begin an argument with Mulder. ""Forget it. Just stop calling me ‘baby’"
Mulder frowned and then sighed in relief, remembering that she drank quite a lot the night before too. Scully must be having a really bad hangover if she was even willing let the ‘baby’ term go.
He was still holding her and was surprised that she still let him. He had expected her to move away from him by now. Although the couch was evidently too small to allow personal spaces for two.
Dana leaned back against Mulder’s chest. The buzzing sound in her head was starting to make her dizzy and she hoped that she didn’t need to throw up. Puking in front of Mulder was not something that she wanted to do ever again. Her cancer treatment once upon a time caused her enough embarrassment already.
He wanted to say something. Anything to break the silence. "Your friends are gone."
She opened her eyes and realized he was right. She smiled thinly, knowing fully that it was one of their plots to pair her up with Mulder. "Yeah, probably at home cuddling up with their other halves." She lied.
He wasn’t sure but she sounded a little wistful and he immediately felt guilty for it. If he wasn’t such a grueling partner, she’d probably had more time to start a family of her own. "Do you wish you had someone to cuddle up with?" He unconsciously asked.
She blushed a little. He was teasing her. "Sure Mulder, any girl would."
He frowned and quietly replied. "Yeah, I can imagine you snuggling up with your gorgeous husband in your cute little suburban home complete with white picket fences."
She frowned. He wasn’t teasing, he was serious. Did the man have any idea what they were already doing? She decided to enlighten him. "Mulder, we’re cuddling."
He arched an eyebrow. "We are?"
She rolled her eyes. "Yes, I’m in your arms, aren’t I?"
"Yeah, but…"
She interrupted him and rambled on aimlessly, trying her best to drown the buzzing noise that was driving her crazy. "We’re not in bed but we’re on a couch, that’s close enough. I’m resting against your chest. Your head’s on mine. Breathing in my hair……."
As he listened to her describe their positions, he was slowly realizing that his hard-on was resting against Scully’s thigh. His eyes widened and he wondered if she noticed.
"……gently caressing my arm. At one point you were even licking…"
"I did not!" He didn’t like where this was going. Her narration was exciting him way too much. And his condition was getting worse or rather bigger.
"You did too. Don’t make me relive the moment. I might not be so forgiving this time." She paused as she felt him more prominently against her. Smiling to herself, she added, "Of course such close proximity between a man and woman usually brings them to wander inappropriate thoughts….."
Mulder went into a coughing fit. Amidst the distraction, he cleverly shifted his body so that his thigh leaned against hers instead. She grinned at his ruse. "Mulder, are you okay?"
"Yeah." He croaked back, a little suspicious that the little vixen in his arms wasn’t as innocent as he thought her to be.
"So are we cuddling, Mulder?"
"What is this big deal about cuddling anyway? Do you know the number of divorce cases with cuddling deficiency as one of the reasons for divorce?"
Dana sighed. "It’s something we girls well… dig."
"It’s a damsel in distress syndrome. A male holding the female or as you call it cuddling is a symbolism of men protecting women. Brings you back to the pre-feminism times where the male is potrayed as the protector."
Dana rolled her eyes. "Mulder, cuddling is not symbolism of male chauvinist crap. It’s just a private moment between two people that care for each other. They’re just enjoying each other’s company. Just being without doing anything."
"Scully, I’m the shrink."
"Well, I’m the woman and that is what cuddling is to me."
"Okay, tell me. Does cuddling make you feel safe, warm maybe even loved?
She ignored the fact that it could refer to their current embrace and answered him. "Yes."
"Because the guy is holding you."
"No, because the guy respects and loves me enough to just want to hold me and nothing else."
"Maybe the guy knows that you pack a mean gun in your handbag and is afraid that you’ll blow his brains out if he pisses you off."
She rolled his eyes. "Mulder, you’re starting to piss me off."
"Okay, fine. Cuddling is loving. Stick to your definition."
"And your definition is you’re protecting me. Being the man?"
"Well…I" He hesitated.
"Yes?"
He carefully picked his words. "I’ve come too close to losing you over these years. Maybe I am protective. But this has nothing to do with being the man, Scully."
She stopped breathing. Mulder was hardly sentimental. Where on earth did that come from?
He sensed her surprise. "Spooked you out there, didn’t I?"
"Uh-huh." They were silent for a while, both busy with their own thoughts. Dana spoke first. "You may be right, Mulder. I do feel protected. After all, you are the only person I trust."
Mulder stopped breathing at her admission. She sensed his discomfort and teased back. "Spooked you out too, didn’t I?"
Mulder growled in reply. "Don’t do that again."
She smiled and snuggled closer to him.
"Did you know you like to snuggle in your sleep?"
"Snuggle? What do you mean? Wait, don’t answer that. The last thing I need right now is a ‘snuggle’ conversation."
He ignored her plea. "Come to think of it, what is the definition of ‘snuggle’ anyway." Dana groaned and released herself from his arms. He protested. "Hey, where are you going?"
Dana walked a little unsteadily towards the phone next to the bed. "I’m starving. Wonder if they’re still serving breakfast."
He whined further. "But, I was just getting used to this ‘cuddle’ thing."
She rolled her eyes, grabbed the pillow on the bed and threw it across the room, hitting Mulder square on the face. "Try that."
Mulder frowned. Sighing, he wrapped his arms around the cushy object and muttered under his breath. "Well, looks like it’s just you and me now, baby."
She yelled from across the room. "Mulder, will you stop using the word ‘baby’!"
