Author's note: I've never watched Empedocles, slept right through it and never forgave myself to this day. Thank God for online script sites! Anyway reading about the nurse asking Mulder and Doggett if they were the husband tickled me so much that I had to write a story to include the moment again. Then I thought heck, I'll bring in all of Scully's men.

It's Raining Men

<<It's raining men, Hallelujah
It's raining men, Amen
It's raining men, Hallelujah
It's raining men, Amen>>

"Lindsey, will you turn that down? This is hardly the place."

I glance at the reception just in time to see the young gum-chewing administrative hand roll her eyes behind the senior nurse's back. But she complies, turning the volume down a notch. It was a rather slow night and my guess she was just trying to liven the place up. After all, night shift had only just begun.

Talking about night shift, I wonder if it's going to take me all night before someone tells me what was going on with my daughter. Dana's been in there for hours. Worried and wanting to keep myself occupied, I take out my purse and head for the coffee machine.

"Just what the hell do you mean by that?" A familiar voice coming down the ER corridor raises my eyebrow. I turn and see Fox, Agent Doggett and Assistant Director Walter Skinner walking briskly towards the reception. Ah, they're here. My daughter's men.

"She was supposed to be resting Mulder, not to investigate this case." Doggett answers Fox's question with a glare.

My daughter's former partner looks incredulous. "And you think I want her to? The only reason why she can't help but step in is because you have absolutely no clue how to deal with this."

By then they had reached the reception desk but it seemed to be temporarily deserted. So Doggett turns back to Fox. "This is a clean cut murder, Mulder. No aliens, no blood-sucking monsters. Just one sick psychopath. It's as simple as that and I can certainly handle it."

Walter sighs and comes between them. "All right, shut up you two. Now I know that Scully was already on leave before the case came up. What I'd like to know is how the hell did she know about the details of the case in the first place?"

Fox draws his stature slightly and a smug look fills his face as he gazes pointingly at Agent Doggett. The latter glares back at him before answering his senior. "I called to enquire about her health and we just talked."

Walker frowns. "So you told her about it?"

Dana's partner had no choice but admit. "We were talking shop."

"I hardly called five gory cases of slicing and dicing talking shop." Fox annoyingly adds.

"Well at least I'm not the one who got her upset until she's in here!" Doggett snaps back.

"I did not upset her!" Fox protests loudly before turning to Walter. "Sir all the years we've worked together, have I ever upset Scully?"

The elder man rolls his eyes. Unconsciously I find myself doing the same. From what I know, Fox used to piss Dana off daily. And what the hell is taking the coffee so long to dispense? In an attempt to distract them from their heated moment, I wave to attract their attention. Unfortunately, they are too preoccupied with staring each other down.

"Mulder what are you doing here?" Walker asks.

The man looks consciously unsure as he replies. "I came to see Scully."

"No! I mean why are you involved in a FBI matter."

"Oh that." Fox fidgets with his jacket as if deciding if he should say. Then he finally mutters. "Scully thought that The Last Boy Scout here might need my help."

"Oh please." Doggett groans. "Help from you?"

Fox snarls back. "I got us a lead, didn't I?"

"Forensics would have come up with that sooner or later without your mumbo jumbo!"

"When, tomorrow? After another woman gets slashed beyond recognition?"

The nurse on duty suddenly appears from a nearby room and hurriedly makes her way to them. "Gentlemen please! This is a hospital! Will you keep your voices down?"

The trio forgets their discussion for the moment and steps closer to the desk. Meanwhile, my paper cup is finally filled and I cautiously pull it out from the machine slot.

"Now is there someone in particular you're waiting for or did you think this establishment is a convenient place for a fight in case anyone got hurt?"

The scarsam hit the mark as all three heads lower in shame. Then Walter braves himself to ask the annoyed nurse. "We're here for Dana Scully?"

"The FBI agent?"

"Yeah, the very pregnant one." Fox adds seriously.

The nurse shoots him a look before glancing at a file in her hand. "And are you the husband?"

My footsteps towards them instantly falter at the question. Smiling I decide to wait to see this one out, just for the heck of it. The three men look at each other awkwardly, all unsure who she was talking to. Then with incredible precision, they mutter together. "No."

The nurse looks up in surprise. Studying their faces for a while, she nods at Fox. "No you all agree that **he's** not the husband or no, none of you are?"

I squelch the hilarity of the moment and interrupt them. "Excuse me. I'm Dana Scully's mother. Is she all right?"

The nurse immediately ignores the men in front of her and comes to me. "Mrs. Scully?"

"Yes. I've been waiting here for a while now. One of you keeps telling me to wait."

"Yes I know. I'm sorry about that but I've only just heard from the doctor." She hesitates and leads me a couple of steps away before explaining. "Your daughter and the baby's fine. Dr Carter will explain everything to you in a couple of minutes. Meanwhile you can see her. But I'm afraid the gentlemen can't. At least, not today."

I smile in relief. "Thank you."

"You're welcome."

The opening of the elevator in a distance momentarily distracts my vision and I see three familiar men walk out of it. Automatically, I groan. "Good Lord, more of them?" It's raining men all right.

The nurse turns to see what has sparked my reaction. The three funny men whom my daughter refers to as The Lone Gunmen walk up to the other worried three men. And almost immediately another argument begins.

The nurse's eyes bulges and she echoes my words in disgust. "Good Lord, more of them?" Then we share a look and laugh. Taking my arm, she leads me away from them. "Come on Mrs Scully, I'll bring you to your daughter. Then, I'll come back and deal with those guys."

"Thank you."

As we walk, she gives me a curious look and then asks. "I hope you don't mind me asking but who the heck are they anyway?"

"Oh just about all the men in my daughter's life at the moment."

"Six men?" The nurse snorts. "Lucky girl. What's the matter? She can't make up her mind?"

I roll my eyes and confide sincerely. "Don't ask me. I'm just her mother."

She laughs and turns the doorknob to designated Dana's room. "Don't stay too long. She needs her rest."

"Thank you."

Her eyelids flutter open as I touch her lightly on her hand. "Hi honey. How do you feel?"

"Sleepy." She mutters. "What on earth did they give me?"

I smile and hold her hand in mine. "Did they tell you anything?"

"Yeah. They told me I need rest. And that this kid is probably the most troublesome unborn child in history."

"Perhaps he or she got it from his or her father?" I ask innocently.

She gives me a sly smile and once again refuses to fall into my little trap. "Oh I don't know. As I recall, I was a pretty difficult kid myself."

Sighing, I place my cup on the table next to her bed. "It wouldn't kill you to tell me you know."

"Mom, we've been through this." She protests.

"Oh all right." I relent, only because she really looks exhausted. Suddenly a couple of raised voices outside force us both to look at the closed room shades. I walk towards it and push them aside slightly to take a look. Uh oh. Fox and Doggett are at each other's throats again. And the Gunmen and Walter are having a separate dispute of their own.

The voices grow louder and my daughter wonders aloud. "What on earth is going on out there?"

"Oh just your angry mob of male admirers."

"What?"

Turning to look at her, I frown and ask. "Dana, don't you have any girlfriends?"

She blinks. "Sure I do."

"Like who?"

Shrugging, she mutters. "Some friends. I just don't see them often. They're all … normal. Married. Happy."

"And you're not?" I walk to her side again. "I always thought you are with the pregnancy and the recent resurrection from the dead?"

She gives me a look and smiles. "Well, I guess I am relatively …. happy. Only there are so many things still left uncertain."

"Tell me about it." I groan, thinking about the two things that I'm dying to know; the identity of the father of her child and the sex of the baby.

I can tell from her face that she knows what I'm thinking. And she tries to distract me instead. "So, no girlfriends out there huh?"

"Unless you count the blonde, long haired one." I joke.

"Well let them in before they kill themselves over me." She jokes back.

"No."

"What do you mean no?"

"I mean you aren't allowed any more visitors tonight."

"But Mom…." She whines.

"Sorry honey, doctor's orders."

She is obviously upset. "You don't understand. I have to see them. It's important!"

"What could be more important than your health and the baby's?"

"Just a couple of minutes. I need to see them." She pleads and calms down so as to not give me more reason to refuse her. "Please."

I look into her earnest blue eyes and give in. "Fine. You only get to see one of them."

"One? Just one?"

"Yes, just one."

"Mom, I need to see all of them. Doggett is lost in this case but he just won't admit it. Then I have to suck up to Skinner because by now he would know that I've made some calls I shouldn't have. The Gunmen need some confirmation on the data they sent me that could help solve this case. And Mulder….. Okay, I can't think of a good enough reason for him."

Unfortunately for her, I am unmoved. "That's five, Dana. I told you, pick one."

"But Mom!"

To show her I mean business, I walk to the door and threaten. "And the offer closes in five seconds."

I open the door and step out of Dana's room. It's surprisingly peaceful outside and I notice that the six men are seated separately. It becomes clearer when the nurse passes me by, explaining. "I had them restricted to different parts of the waiting room."

"Ah." I say simply.

My appearance soon gains everyone's attention and they are hurriedly drawn to me. Fox asks first. "How is she?"

"She's fine." I tell them and watch as they all breath a sigh of relief. "The baby's fine too."

"What happened?" Walter questions this time.

"I have yet to see the doctor but Dana seems unconcerned so I take that as good news. Anyway, she needs plenty of rest and that means she can't see any of you tonight. If you want, you can drop by tomorrow."

The disappointment on all six men's faces makes me almost feel sorry for them. Well at least until Blondie speaks out. "Can't we even see her for just a minute? We just need to know if she figured out anything from the data."

My glare is sufficient to tell him what I think. He grimaces and hangs his head down in embarrassment. Unable to help myself, I nag further and the remainder five heads joins the first. "You guys are supposed to help her through this. You should be ashamed of yourselves!" And after waiting for a full minute as a completion of the whole guilt trip, I dismiss them gently. "All right now, off you go."

They move to do so and I quickly stop one of them. "Not you Fox, you stay. I want to speak to you."

The other five men look slightly relieved that it wasn't them singled out for the extra 'talking to'. Giving Fox little glances of condolence, they shuffle off quietly towards the elevator. Meanwhile Fox looks as if he is about to get a tooth pulled out.

Then suddenly, he begins rambling. "I'm sorry, Mrs Scully. Your daughter was worried about Doggett taking the case. I don't know why….. I mean the guy's a grown man, obviously capable of taking care of himself….."

I roll my eyes and shut him up with a firm voice. "Fox."

It works and he looks at me nervously. "Yeah?"

"I probably will only be able to hold the nurse off for ten minutes."

He blinks at me blankly as if wondering if he understood me right. Then briefly turning to the direction of Dana's room, he cautiously gazes back at me. "Are you sure it's all right?"

"Yes. Just don't tell the others."

He grins childishly. "Never dream of it."

"So **go**!" I tell him in mock annoyance and he does. But just as he was about to turn the doorknob, I call him. "Fox?"

"Yes?"

"No stupid jokes or teasing. She is absolutely in no condition to laugh or smack you. Understand?"

"Yes maam." He responds as seriously as he can and I watch him disappear into my daughter's room.

Somehow I feel a little lighthearted but I can't really put a finger on a reason. Perhaps it's because my daughter's choice is my favourite wish all along? Perhaps. Turning around, my smile dies when I come face to face with the scowling nurse on duty. Uh oh, obviously she saw me let Fox go in.

Seeking for her understanding, I give her a helpless look. "But she finally picked one!"

Frivolous, yes. Short, no doubt about it. But I still love to hear what you thought of it. Thanks for reading!
