Touchy VI **DAY 3**
The sun streamed in through the open windows, trailing slowly onto his face. He twitched uncomfortably for a while before finally opening his eyelids. Judging that it was pretty late from the brightness of he room, he was pleasantly surprised to find that all he wanted to do was go back to sleep. Being a morning person, this was pretty unusual.
It was only then that he remembered the events of the night before. How Scully was almost sucked into oblivion because of nasty Navy myth. He turned to her side of the bed and found she wasn't there. 'Must be freshening up.' He thought and his gaze lazily rose towards the direction of the bathroom. But as soon as his eyes focused past the bathroom door, his jaw dropped. Because never in a million years did he expect to see his partner, standing stark naked, in front of the mirror.
XXXXXXXXXXX
Scully studied the freckles on her arm. They were getting worse, she thought. 'Must be from the sun.' For the third time that morning, she took the bottle of sunblock and glared at the label. 'Protects against cell damage and neutralizes Free Radicals, my ass!' Nevertheless, she undid the cap, squeezed out a huge blob of lotion and began rubbing it evenly over her neck, shoulders, arms and back.
After a good night's rest, she felt revived and ready for work. The excitement of nearly drowning totally forgotten, though she had a feeling Durst would probably offer her a day's rest. Should she take it? She wondered. On one hand she would be able to sneak around while everyone was out of the hostel. But on the other, she'd rather be outside with the waves, despite King Neptune and his sons.
As she pondered over the choice, she noticed that the bathroom door was ajar. 'How the hell did it...?' Her mind abruptly went blank when her eyes rested on Mulder. To her utter horror, the man was fully awake. An intelligible sound came from her throat but she could not make out what she had said. All she could do was stare back at her partner, who amazingly enough gazed back at her in silence.
Suddenly it was as if a switch went off in their heads because they both began reacting at once. After miserably attempting to cover her nakedness with several arm movements, Scully regained her use senses and lunged for the door, slamming it shut. Mulder on the other hand, leapt out of bed and came to a nervous halt in front of the bathroom. While his mind raced for something to say, he was taken aback when the slammed door bounced open again. This time he had a close up view of her in all her glory.
"Mulder!" She yelled furiously.
"Sorry!" He hastily shrieked back, a pitch higher from his usual tone range. He had his back facing the bathroom door now. 'Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit!... ' It was all he could think of. Meanwhile, he could hear her struggling with the door and cursing like a sailor she claimed she never was.
Somehow the bloody door and its frame were out of alignment! 'How could that be possible?' Scully fumed. It was fine twenty minutes ago while she in the shower! Giving up, she pulled a robe on and flung the door open.
He heard the door creak but he dared not turn around. He wanted her to say it was okay to do so. For some time, there wasn't a sound. And yet, he could feel her presence behind him. Then the presence began to move and he braved himself to take a peek behind him.
To his relief, she was in a robe. "Scully, I...." He stopped when he realized that she was stuffing some clothes into a bag, he asked. "What are you doing? Where are you going?"
"Anywhere but here." She growled, somewhat implying that she didn't trust him enough to get dressed within his presence.
"But we're... we're married!"
"Mulder, don't even!" She snapped back fiercely.
His temper was beginning to match hers. "This is ridiculous Scully and you know it! You can't do this and risk exposing our cover. Besides, it's not that I saw anything I haven't see before."
She spun around so quickly that he took a step back. "How would you like it if you caught me gawking at you like some meat on display?"
"I'd actually be flattered."
Rolling her eyes heavenwards, she muttered in feign enlightenment. "Of course you would."
Ignoring the dig, he tried to grab her bag but she swiftly jerked it out of his reach. "Come on, don't be ridiculous. You're acting like a child."
"Oh and I suppose what you did was totally professional?"
"What's really bothering you about this? That the fucking door had problems staying shut? Or did I hit a nerve somewhere?"
"What?"
"Yes Scully, a nerve. What was it? I turned you on or something? Even if I did, you can't take it out on me!"
Her eyes flashed with brilliant anger. But she was determined not to lose control on his account. In fact, her voice was surprisingly cool when she told him. "So the door opened. I don't blame you for that. What infuriates me if that you didn't say a word. You just lay there and watched. Like I was one of the porn stars in your videos."
Her words disconcerted him and he struggled for a moment to regain his composure. "So this is about respect? You think I don't respect you?"
"Mulder, I was standing there naked...."
"And that made you less respected? That's preposterous."
For some reason, he was twisting her words around. "No! That's not what I..."
"Fine Scully. If remaining clothed in my eyes means so much to you, maybe you would feel better if you saw me naked?"
"What?"
But Mulder seemed to be driven by some unknown force beyond her knowledge. She blinked dumbly as he took of his shirt and removed his pants together with his boxers at one go. Tossing them aside, he waved his arms as if to say 'Ta-daa'. And Scully's jaw dropped.
Meanwhile, Mulder felt exhilarated. He was standing in front of his partner of seven years without a stitch on him and yet, he felt like he had just win the Nobel prize or something. But it wasn't long before he noticed that she wasn't staring where she should be. "Umm Scully, I'd be a more flattered if your gaze is tilted a little more... south?"
Scully suddenly jerked her head, as if shaking herself out of a trance. Nonetheless she kept her gaze fixed on Mulder's face, denying him the satisfaction. "Mulder if you think this circus act fixes everything, you've got another thing coming."
"Circus act?" He looked mortally offended, looking down on himself. "Freakishly small.... or large?"
She almost fell for that one as her gaze dropped a notch, right down to his waist. Catching herself in time, she turned around and growled. "Damn it Mulder! Put your pants on!"
"No. Not until we're even. Come on Scully, take a good look!"
"For God's sakes! It's not like I've never seen you before!"
He triumph exclaimed. "Exactly!"
'I give up!' She thought, and lunged for the exit in front of her. But he was too fast for her, his arm shot out ahead to stop her for opening the door. She nearly yelled at him. "Mulder, get away from me!"
Desperate to get her to listen to reason, he gushed uncharacteristically. "Damn it Scully! We're beyond this and you know it. You know exactly what I think of you, how much I respect and how much you are a part of my life. So why the hell are you making this hard?"
"Why the hell are you?" She shot back.
Her accusation struck him dumb for a moment. She was right, he was the one dancing around the truth. He had stumbled upon her in a vulnerable position and was being a total jerk about it. Taking a deep breath, he came clean. "Fine, I'll tell you why I didn't say a word just now. It wasn't because I didn't want to, it was because I... I couldn't." His voice trailed off softly.
"You couldn't?"
"I couldn't." He repeated, this time a little more confident. "I tried, really I did. My mouth opened but nothing came out. I couldn't do anything really. I couldn't move. I couldn't even think." He sighed. "Try being in my shoes Scully. You wake up and open your eyes to your gloriously naked partner. And she's beautiful. How would you react any differently from me? How could you?"
Deep inside, a warmth was beginning to spread over Scully's heart but she remained silent, waiting to see if Mulder was done with his confession. A full minute of silence told her that he was and it was a cue to begin hers. "You were right, Mulder. We are beyond this. But the thing is, I need my space. It's much easier being in DC, where we can go our separate ways at the end of the day and..... recuperate from each other. But with this assignment..."
Mulder's heart constricted at the frustration in her voice. "I'm not exactly trilled with this arrangement either. Although one would think after seven years, you would be used to my company by now."
She caught the hurt in his voice and turned around to face him. "This has nothing to do with your company." He gave her a look and she checked herself. "Well maybe it does but it's not that I don't like being with you. Like I said, I need my space."
Looking earnestly into his eyes, she hoped he would understand without her actually needing to say it aloud. Unfortunately the man had been hurt too many times before. Given no choice, she openly admitted. "Mulder, I need time away from you because we need it. Do you understand? We need it to cool down...... To catch our breaths."
At last, he understood what she was trying to say. She was right again, of course. They did need it and throughout the years, she made sure they got it. From ignoring his innuendoes to refusing to see him during weekends, she was very good at maintaining the space they needed to keep their professional status as partners. Squirming slightly, he finally muttered. "I understand."
She was relieved; the dark lost look on his face had faded. But the feeling of awkwardness was still there. Not knowing what else to say, she mumbled. "Good."
He didn't respond, instead intently keeping her gaze steady with his own. She bravely stared back but after some time, found it disconcerting. So she looked away, first downwards until she remembered that he was naked and her head instantly swung up, staring past his left ear. And Mulder began laughing.
"What?" She demanded to know, now glaring directly at him.
"You're absolutely determined not to look at me, aren't you?" He said in between chuckles.
"I am looking at you." She growled.
He grinned, waggling his eyebrows. "I mean all of me."
"Oh for heaven's sakes..." Scully groaned, pushing his careless hand out of the way. She turned, twisted the doorknob and attempted to take off before Mulder saw her blushing cheeks. To her surprise, Durst was behind the door, his hand raised in mid air as if about to knock.
"Lynn, I was just about to get you and your husband." He indicated to a tall figure behind him. "You've got a visitor. This is Mr. Jeremy Reeves from CSLA, the California State Lifeguard Association. He's just doing a routine check and wants to find out how you're settling in."
Scully quickly took a deep breath to regain her composure. But whatever little she had willed up obliterated as soon as she saw that the guest in question was her real life boss, Assistant Director Walter Skinner. Almost blurting out 'sir', she checked herself in time and managed to mutter a soft hello.
"Mrs. Bunsen." Skinner nodded politely. He was dressed casually in a yellow polo T-shirt and jeans. On his breast pocket, a clip-on tag with an assumed CSLA ID. Like them, he was undercover and being here in flesh meant that he had something important to tell them. He asked. "Is your husband here?"
She wanted to say 'no' but it was much too late. The door was wide enough for Durst to see that he was behind her. And the administrator began to acknowledge Mulder before realizing that he was completely naked. "Good, you're here too Josh. We were hoping..."
Mulder was too stunned with Skinner's appearance to notice Durst's sudden loss of words. And he wondered what could be the fastest way to make himself look decent. To his partner's horror, he decided on her. Grabbing her shoulders, he pulled her in front of him to block the view.
Scully squirmed to get out of his grip. "Josh! What are you doing?"
Mulder hastily made something up. "I'm sorry about this gentlemen, the missus was just checking on the muscle I pulled the day before."
Despite the danger of blowing her cover, Scully wasn't at all comfortable of literally covering Mulder's ass and continued to resist his grasp. The battle concluded with Scully's defeated sigh.
Somehow Skinner managed to keep his face blank. "He pulled a muscle?" He turned to Durst. "Isn't this only his third day?" Knowing that this was a jab at Mulder, Scully tried very hard not to laugh. But Mulder winced.
Durst brushed off Skinner's question and led him out. "Perhaps we should wait for them outside."
"Yes, lets." Skinner shot his subordinates a quick warning look. "Please."
When the door closed, Mulder groaned. "We're so dead."
"No, you're dead. I wasn't the naked one."
"But it takes two to tango, Scully."
She gave him a murderous look before deciding that arguing aimlessly was not going to improve the fact that Skinner was waiting for them outside. "Come on, Mulder. It's time to face the music."
"A pissed off Assistant Director, you mean."
XXXXXXXXXXX
They found Skinner outside, glaring dangerously at the sea. Sharing a tormented look with each other, they reluctantly went to meet him.
"Mr. Reeves, sorry to keep you waiting." Mulder calmly said.
His superior glanced about him as if checking if they were within anyone's hearing range. Then he motioned them to follow his lead. "Come on, let's take a walk."
After a moment's silence, Scully could not hold back any longer. "Sir, we're sorry about what you saw. But believe it or not, what you saw was purely circumstantial. Mulder was changing and I was facing the door, waiting for him. He took so long that after a while, I decided that I would wait outside. So I opened the door and there you were, with Durst. "
Without Skinner's notice, Mulder shot his partner an impressed look before agreeing. "Yes sir, that's exactly what happened."
"Well, I'm glad to hear of some reasonable explanation of that very disturbing scene." Skinner drawled but unfortunately in a tone that didn't sound too convincing. He continued. "Especially, in view of what I'm about to tell you."
"What is it, sir?"
Skinner paused in his step and turned to face them. "You've been set up."
Scully echoed in confusion. "Sir?"
"They wanted the both of you here. Despite Carter's claims of going through a long list of partners, you two were meant to be here for a reason."
"And what's that reason sir?"
Giving them a hard look, Skinner growled. "What else? By putting you on this case, they've holed you up for six months. Whereupon I'm expected to deal with your department's audit the best I can. And let me assure you, it is far from a walk in a park. Without you two personally justifying your expenses to the auditor, I'm not even sure you'll have a job after you wrap this case up."
"But they can't do that! We have a right to fend for ourselves. Can't you delay the audit until we get back? We won't be able to spend any money during that time anyway."
"What do you think I've been trying to do? But the fact is the X-files have been on the auditor's waiting list for two years now. And according to them, it's now or never."
Shaking his head, Mulder muttered under his breath. "No, this is not happening. We're not about to lose our life's work just because of a fucking audit!"
To their surprise, Skinner lowered his voice. "Actually, I'm not sure if that's the real agenda. I think they're counting on much more happening here within this six months." His agents caught the insinuation but dare not say anything. He went on slyly. "I've asked around. Lisa Matthews is not someone to be trusted."
Mulder played dumb. "Are you saying that her psychological evaluations about us may not have been accurate?"
Unfortunately for him, Skinner was not in the playful mood. "I'm saying Mulder, that if I were you, I would keep my pants on. All the time."
Scully cringed and dutifully came to her partner's defense. "Sir again, I assure you that after these years Mulder and I have been working, we have always been...."
"Agent Scully...." He interrupted quickly. "I beg you not to finish that sentence, lest I remember our last conversation."
While Mulder's eyes narrowed at his meaning, Scully humbly conceded to her superior with rather red cheeks.
"Now." Skinner cleared his throat. "I'm doing all I can to delay the audit. What you do within this couple of months is entirely up to you. But for God's sake, try keep it clean." Then he strode off, leaving his agents glaring after him.
Mulder sighed. "Scully, do you feel the strange desire to go back to our room, have mind blowing sex, all because we were just told not to?"
She turned to look at him. "Oh yeah."
He grinned. "So you wanna?"
"Unfortunately you're on duty and I think, I've got the day off."
"It'll only take a couple of minutes."
Rolling her eyes, she started walking towards the hostel. "Mind blowing sex doesn't take a couple of minutes, Mulder."
XXXXXXXXXXX
It was in the middle of the afternoon and Scully was furious. After his morning shift, her partner disappeared and naturally, he had left without a word to anyone. As usual.
"Hey Lynn, you okay?" Felix suddenly asked as he entered the hostel doorway.
Sitting on the coach with a magazine on one hand and a coffee cup in the other, she instantly turned her scowl into a smile. "Yeah thanks."
"You both are certainly a pair." Felix grinned. "Just two nights and already plenty of excitement."
"Very funny, Felix." She rolled her eyes, but not angrily. "Say, aren't you on duty?"
"Yeah. But Durst wants to see Ruby in the tower and I'm the messenger boy. She's not answering her page. Is she in?"
"I think so." She answered nonchalantly even though she knew for certain that Ruby was. Scully had been waiting for the blonde to leave her room all afternoon so that she could snoop around. "Why? What's up?"
Felix shrugged. "Something about the coastal logbook being missing."
At the mention of the logbook, Scully was careful to put on a blank look. Despite last night's dramatic turn of events, she and her partner were both level headed enough to slip it off the boat. And Scully spent the whole of her free morning going through the entries, hoping to find a pattern that matched the drug supply information that Skinner provided. Unfortunately, she found nothing.
Meanwhile, Felix continued. "Durst already asked Josh if he saw it on board last night. But you husband said he was much too worried about you to notice. I guess that leaves Ruby. She was the last to use it before you."
Perking up, Scully casually asked. "Oh, she was on coastal duty the night before?"
"No, Durst was. But Ruby took it for a brief spin before your detention."
"It's amazing that Durst allows such trivialities."
"Well Ruby has been here longer than anyone of us, including Durst." Felix nodded towards the hostel stairs. "I guess I should go get her before Durst starts beeping me."
Scully shot him a small smile. When he was out of sight, she jumped from the couch and hastily headed for her own room. Inside, she stood behind the closed door and listened for Ruby and Felix's footsteps to pass.

The community library had a cozy feeling to it and Mulder was reminded of his dusty office in the basement. The hot afternoon had reduced the number of patrons to a handful of loyal bookworms. Many of them read while fanning themselves with pieces of folded paper, which suspiciously looked as if they were torn from the very books they were reading from.
Mulder walked past a row of reading tables to get to the librarian desk. An elderly lady with large round glasses looked at him. "Yes, may I help you?"
"Yes thank you. I'm looking for books on ancient mythology. Perhaps some literature on the local beliefs."
Miss Anne Tagget, as her nameplate revealed, raised an eyebrow. "Yes. We do have a number of books and periodicals on that." She stood up to lead the way to the section in question. "You may even find the Asatru modern creation myth of California fascinating."
Mulder smiled, pleased that he would have another story to challenge Scully's theory of evolution. "I'm sure I will."
"Are you a surfer?"
"Occasionally."
"Have you heard about the Californian mythological sea beast called the Kelp Monster?"
"No." Intrigued, he asked for more. "What is it?"
"Locals here believe that reaches up and grabs the passing fin of a surfboard, stalling the ride or causing the surfer to wipe out. We have a number of local newspaper clippings that tell of such experiences."
"What does this creature look like?"
"No one really knows. Personally, I think it's a hoax. Made up because none of these young punks want to admit that they've been clam-shelled."
"Clam-shelled?"
"To be engulfed by the waves." She explained. "Sometimes the waves can be really macking. Especially on days where the nip factor is way high and the kids have slower upshots."
Mulder was trying really hard to follow the conversation but it seemed that the lady was communicating to him a foreign language. Embarrassed that she was much in tune with surfer talk even though she was twenty years older, he simply nodded. "Right."
"Anyway, you'll find what you need in this shelf."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome." She paused for a moment, before asking. "By the way, are you any good?"
"I'm sorry?" Mulder asked, bewildered.
"On the surf?"
"Uh... Well, I can hold my own." He lied.
Her brow furrowed and she studied him with stern green eyes. Mulder was almost sure that she could see right through him. But then she surprised him by leaning towards him, whispering. "Friday. It's coming."
He wasn't sure if he should ask 'What was?'. Evidently his puzzled look was enough because she told him anyway.
"This Friday. Take your seven-footer out, you don't want to be underboarded. Stand by and wait for it. It's the Big Kahuna. I know because I can feel it." She looked past him for a moment, then back at him. "Yes, it's coming this Friday."
Mulder was seriously beginning to wonder if the lady was nuts. 'Talk about eccentric librarians.' He thought. But remembering his manners, he thanked her for her service.
She didn't respond. Instead she walked away, muttering under her breath. "It's coming. This Friday...."
Still staring after her, he made sure that Miss Tagget found her way safely behind her desk. Then putting away thoughts of the mysterious Big Kahuna that was coming on Friday, Mulder began scanning the books on the acknowledged shelf. He picked out a selection of relevant book titles and carried them to the nearest reading station. Making himself comfortable, he began his research.
XXXXXXXXXXX
"And where the hell have you been?" She demanded to know, as he loaded a new set of diving equipment onto the lifeguard boat from the dock.
He paused at his task, glancing at the tower to see if Durst was watching him. Satisfied that the administrator was nowhere in sight, he turned to Scully. "I was at the local library."
"The library? Why?"
He shrugged. "I had some research to do."
"I can't believe this! Are you trying blow our cover?"
Bewildered, he shot back in mock anxiety. "Oh gee, a life guard in a library! It's so obvious I'm a undercover FBI agent."
Glaring daggers at him, she hissed. "No, what's obvious to me is that you don't give a damn about this case. All you care about is figuring out what was at the bottom of the ocean, trying to kill me."
"Well someone's got to care about you, Scully."
"Oh don't give me that." She groaned. "You're just plain impossible! A drug ring is operating right before your eyes and you're out on a monster hunt."
"Durst has put you off active duty until further notice, did you know that?"
"Yes I found out and I have talked to him about it. He's putting me back on tomorrow."
"Even with Neptune after your life?"
Rubbing her forehead in frustration. "For the last time, it's just a myth. It isn't real. It doesn't mean anything."
"Right." He suddenly took step towards her and leaned over her short stature. "As meaningless as always allowing the redhead aboard the ship first to avoid bad luck." He watched her countenance change, from confidence to embarrassment. Smiling, he continued. "There's an extraordinary amount of superstitions and myths about the sea that I never knew about. For example, it is unlucky to start a cruise on Friday because it was the day Christ was crucified on. Never start a voyage on the second Monday in August. This was the day Sodom & Gomorrah was destroyed. Black traveling bags are bad luck for sailors.... Shall I go on?"
"Mulder..."
"So you did know that redheads bring bad luck to a ship?"
She sighed. "Yes. I also know that flat-footed people, like redheads, are bad luck. The danger can be avoided by speaking to them before they speak to you. Did you know that women on board a ship make the sea angry?"
Not to be bested, he shot back. "Ah but a naked woman on board will calm the sea."
"Black cats are considered good luck and will bring a sailor home from the sea."
"Dolphins swimming with the ship are a sign of good luck too. Killing one though, will bring bad luck."
"It is also unlucky to kill a gull. They contain the souls of sailors lost at sea."
"Church Bells heard at sea mean someone on the ship will die."
"Never say the word 'drowned' at sea."
Mulder racked his brain but he just could not think of another. So he sighed. "All right, you win. I'm out of superstitions."
"And there's like a million more, Mulder."
"But you believe in some of them." He accused. "As long as I know you, you make sure you get up every boat, ship or floating plank before I do."
She couldn't deny that fact. "You're right, I do. But only because it's something that I've been doing all my life. Every time the Scullys go for a trip with others, we make sure we get on the boat first. It's inbuilt, really. My dad's a true sailor. He never believes in tempting fate. Especially not with other people's lives."
"But you don't care about your own life."
She groaned. " I told you, I lost my cross. That counts."
"What if it doesn't?"
By this time, she had had it. "Mulder, we have a job to do here and I'm going to do it, with or without your help. Yes, even if Neptune is after my life. You just have to live with it!"
"Fine." He growled back, eyeing the boat next to him. "And you're right, these superstitions are just utter rubbish. Come on, Scully. Come on board with me." To her surprise, he climbed onto the lifeguard boat and gave her an expected look.
With a disgruntled glare, she told him. "I'm not going on board."
He grinned irritatingly. "Why not?"
"Because Ruby is your partner and she's due here any minute for the coastal run with you. I don't think she'd like it if she saw me hanging around. "
"I'm sure she won't mind. We've got like half an hour before we set off."
"Still, I'd rather not."
He continued to taunt her. "Come on, Scully. Prove the myth wrong. Step on board after me."
"This has nothing to do with the myth."
"Oh I think there is." He snapped at her. "I think you're more willing to take a chance on your life than you are with mine."
"Don't flatter yourself, Mulder."
"I only speak the truth."
She gave up. "I'm leaving."
"Uh Scully?"
"What?"
"How about a kiss?"
"Drop dead!"
"If only you'll step on board, maybe we'll make that happen." She turned to go but he swung himself off the boat and was at her side. "Wait, we've got to make up."
"What? Why?"
"Because Durst has been watching us argue from his tower for the past five minutes."
"So? Couples argue all the time."
He raised an eyebrow. "They also make up and so far we haven't been doing much to prove our domestic felicity."
She was incredulous. "How about the naked stunt you pulled today?"
"Just one kiss on the cheek. I don't think that's too much to ask, Scully."
Glaring at him for a while, she soon sighed. "Fine."
"Good. Here goes." Leaning down slightly, he lightly brushed his mouth against hers.
It took a while for her to realize what had just happened. And when she did, he was safely on the boat where he knew that she wouldn't go after him. As calmly as possible so as to not betray their marital bliss facade, she growled. "You said cheek."
He grinned. "I lied."
Gritting her teeth to control the leftover fragments of her temper, she muttered. "Mulder, when I turn around, Durst better be at the tower looking at us."
And fortunately for Mulder, he was.
