April in the Vapor Zone. Part 1. |
Planet Tart was the place where April decided to leave Stellar back. People were living in a small colony around the spaceport. April could not risk to land there, for fear that she might be discovered. Instead, she found a nice flat place to land on, located not too far away from town.
"Keep it." April gave a plastic card to her sister. "You can use it on any planet that you're on... Even on this one."
"What is it?" Stellar asked confused as she turned it around in her hands.
"A credit card of course." her tone sounded annoyed. "Or have you already forgotten how to use one?"
Stellar shrugged her shoulders. She wanted to go with April no matter what was going to happen to them. Unfortunately, as for now, she was not going to listen to her. So, she decided to let her do what ever she wanted.
Turning around, Stellar docilely stumbled towards the town.
"Wait!" she suddenly heard April's voice coming from behind.
Her sister was taking Nova out from spacecraft.
"Take her with you... I won't be needing to where I'm going to." she frowned for a moment as she passed the reign to her sister.
"Stellar, I know you understand me... Please, try to explain it to our parents as well."
Stellar nodded her comprehensively while staring at the floor.
"Take care." said April before running off to the ship, hoping that her sister did not notice the tears in her eyes.
The ship took off and quickly vanished past in the clouds. Stellar watched it disappear, and remained standing there for a while. It was then when she realized that her one sister was not going to change her mind... That she was not going to return. With a heavy heart, she mounted on Nova and made her way towards the town.

April was not planing on hiding at all, thus, she did not even bother on turning on monitors. When she approached Planet Santa, she reactivated the radio.
"This is April Eagle... Asking for permission to land."
She repeated it a few times, making sure that they did indeed hear her.
"I'm reading you like an open book." she thought. "You're waiting when the convoy will find me."
As if on cue, four light stars soon streaked from the planet and raced towards her.
"Now they will have to report this after having come with visual contact with me. Of course, their superiors will then tell me what to do next."
April suddenly became weary. Since she was the one who had decided to cooperate (of course, this was how she prefered to call it)... They were simply not moving fast enough for her taste. Finally, the green lamp flashed, transmission soon followed.
"Follow us. Follow us… If you decide to disobey, we'll open fire!"
It was repeated several times before April turned the radio off.
"Dumb heads!" she was really angry now. "I'm giving up myself, and they are acting like they've caught me!"
But no one heard her words.
She carefully piloted the ship towards the landing bay, and accurately followed every maneuver given by the leading fighter. They had passed the cloud decks, giving her plenty of opportunities to escape from the convoy. It really showed how incompetent they were. Yet, she forced herself to remain steadfast with her decision. No matter what happened, she was going to stick to it.

Stellar quietly rode into town. The town itself though seemed to be more western oriented, looking like an old Wild Western times. To Stellar though, everything was new to her as she carefully studied the buildings, thinking hw well-thought-out it was built.
She asked the first one person that she met where she could stay for the night. The man was kindly enough and showed her a large house. Stellar thankied him, and slowly walked towards it, leaving the man looking at her back, shrugging in wonder. He could not understand how in the world a girl such as hers was riding on an unusual horse... A horse he once saw on TV... Although he could not remember what show it was... Was it "Galaxy and Agriculture" ? Or, was it in news?
Stellar did not even tied Nova as she walked in. The place itself looked like bar on the ground floor, but without any customers. An old man soon came out of the slam, who looked at her intently. Stellar was not one bit confused with the cold welcome. Instead, she gave him credit card, and said in a firm voice.
"I would like to rent a room."
Tart was a quiet planet. Its population in general involved themselves in agriculture. News were getting there very slow, so they had not heard anything about the chaos revolving around the Cavalry Commend. Otherwise, he would not have accept a credit card with a golden symbol on it. The owner himself felt very honored for having someone that special coming from the world famous organization. He soon started to smile.
"Sign here, please." he asked, turning the registration book towards Stellar. "It's quite hard to believe that something that important is happening around here for the Cavalry Command to send someone to us." the owner tried to be more friendly.
"I'm here on business." Stellar said the first thing she could thought off even though it was truth.
"Business? On that horse?" he definetly saw how Stellar got here. "Without an armor suit? Miss Stellar?"he read her name from the book. "We might be a little away from the High-Tech centers, but we certainly know that people can't travel around through space without an armour."
"I'll leave on the first spaceship!" she cut in. "Now, be so kind enough and show me my room. I'm very tired."
The owner nodded his head. Stellar certainly knew how to get her point across.
"And your luggage, miss? What should I do with the horse?" he then asked.
"I don't have any luggages. And the horse… Just move it from the sidewalk."
"Should I feed it?" the man asked in confusion.
"No!" she exclaimed even though she was not certain herself.
"All right then. Follow me."
Stellar was lead through the stairs until they reached the second floor. The man opened the door for her before passing the keys to her. He nodded his head, and turned around to leave, thinking that he was done. However, Stellar stopped him before he could even take the first step.
"I'm sorry to bother you again... But when does the next ship here?"
"Where are you planning on going?"
"To Planet Earth!"
"Well... We don't have any direct connections. Once a month, a liner come here, then heads to Morka. From there, you can catch another liner to get to Earth."
"And when is the next flight out?
"In about two weeks."
"Aren't there any ships that head before that?"
"Well... We have a ship heading to Riza in four days."
"Can I get to Earth from there?"
"From there? No, but if you'll go to Morka from there, then yes."
"And how often does a ship go from Riza to Morka?" Stellar pronounced the strange names diligently.
"Once a week... I think…"
"All right, be so kind, and book me to Riza and a luggage place for my horse."
The owner nodded, and Stellar went into her room, shutting the door behind her. In relief, Stellar laid down on her bed, and instantly fell asleep.

They were not hard on April. After such welcome, she did not really count on it. She was immediately escorted from the landing bay to the mayor's office. As April noticed, the convoy was from a local police force without any trace of Cavalry Command whatsoever. Therefore, this could only mean one thing. They were going to judge her themselves.
Meeting the captive in the Maine Hall became the highlight in the building. Unfortunately, it was not a pleasant meeting. An old dignitary stepped up and read the official paper confirming April's arrest out loud.
"We will give you an advocate." the old man then added with a straight face. "You may refuse or choose your own."
"Yours will be just fine." April replied sullenly.
She did not care what lower person would represent her since she already knew what the decision of jury was.

April watched as the trial proceeded with interest. She thought to herself that it was indeed quite an interesting performance. It was really realistic, but every one followed their part written a day before. It was not all too hard to predict what they were going to say next.
Only once she was given a word. Before the jury went to make their decision, she had been asked whether or not she wanted to say something in her defense. However, she simply refused it since there was no point to it. Few minutes later, the jury returned to their seats, and the judge announced the verdict.
"Guilty as charged! April Eagle... You are here sentenced here to death. However, taking in consideration for having giving yourself up at the authorities of Santa, the court has decided to be lenient in this case... And charge you with a liftetime sentence."
April opened her mouth in surprise. She had expected to be sentenced to death, but not this.
"So you think that my 'previous deserts' can overweigh those deaths I have caused?" April said in her lost thoughts. "How are you going to look into the eyes of their mothers and wives? Will they understand?"
A heavy arm lay on her shoulder forcing her to shut up and sit. April obeyed.
"Really! Who needs it? No mercy for the traitors!" one of the jury member shouted.
The judge showed no reaction.
"No indulgence to her! Death to her without any regrets!" another one quickly agreed.
Chaos soon errupted in the courtroom, and the judge started to bang loudly on his table.
"Silence! Jury, please vote now... Who agrees with the execution?"
All hands minus one was risen.
"So, the majority has spoken!" judge stroke again.
"Hey Graham, why didn't you vote for execution?"
"Because it's a simple way for her to get away for self-incrimination."
The ones who heard him, eventually agreed with him, but it was already too late.
"The execution will take place in exactly 40 days from now. You can use this time to appeal to the court. The court is now adjourned."
April rose. She did it - all faults now lay on her along. Now, no one was going to dare to stain the honor of Cavalry Command... Most importantly, the honor of her father.
