April in the Vapor Zone. Part 1. |
Shivering, April waited for her dreadful day to come. At first, she had been calm and resolved to accept what she deserved with pride. However, as the day drew closer, she began to realize that she wanted to go on living. She soon started to regret of her decision. Now it became obvious - it was her biggest mistake of her life to have done such a thing.
In exactly one week before the excecution day, April had been allowed to see her family. Her father and sister had already arrived there as soon as the government of Santa announced its final decision. They had been pleading with it to allow them to see her. None of the diplomatic influence could help to free her this time.
When Commander Eagle and Stellar finally came to see April, none of them knew what to say to her. It only caused April to become more depressed about her impending doom. The akward silence was eventually broken when she started asking about their future plans. All of which occured in less than 10 minutes.
In the end, the guards came back to escort April back to her cell. However, before she left, she had whispered something to Stellar.
"I know that this is going to be hard for you right now... But... For both of us, and for the sake of our parents... Please, live through it. This is my destiny. So, don't you make the same mistakes as I did."
Then, she turned to her father.
"I just hope that I have been a good daughter for you as you always as hoped for. In the end, I know that I've finally done something right. At least, my guilt won't be put on anyone else. Hopefully, you'll understand all this... That it was the only way to save the honor of our family and the honor of Cavalry Command."
"If you just had given us some time, and listen to us, all of this would have been different..." There was so much pain in his eyes.
"It's… It's already too late to change anything. Please forgive me, father." she said at last before the guards took her away.

It was two more days before the execution, and the Star Sheriffs decided to break April from the prison. However, when Commander Eagle found out about it, he strictly forbad it them to go through with it.
"If the locals ever find out about this, it could mean war! On top of that, all Star Sheriffs will condemned as criminals! There won't be anyone to protect Earth and the New Frontier from the Outriders."
The night before, April couldn't get any sleep at all. All the sleeping pills that she had been given didn't worked at all. Her heart kept racing on and on, and ther wasn't enough fresh air in the room to calm her nerves. Her senses become so sharp, that she even could detect the slightest sound behind the locked door of the windows.
"I don't want to die!" the words kept echoing from one corner to the other.
Now she was ready to escape from this place. If only a guard would walk in… She would know what to do…
Like an answer to her prayers, she heard a very quiet knock on the door, followed by the sound of turning of the key. Then, with a creak, the door opened.
'They want to kill me quietly in mya sleep!' she thought terrified, 'Then why was there a knock? To check if I was asleep or what?'
There was no more time to think or to be afraid - it was time now to act.
The door finally opened wide enough for April to see Saber Rider behind it.
He stretched his arm out, grabbed April and pushed her out through it. He put his finger to his lips, telling her to remain quiet.
For a second, April didn't know what to do. What if they were all captured?! That would mean that all her friends would end us traitors to the human race. They would all end up in the same situation as she was in right now. This shouldn't happen to them.
But what about her wanting... her will to live?! What was she going to choose? Life away from everything that she had ever loved, or a simple death? To condemn her friends of treason or have her blood wash off the disgrace from her family?
April saw Fireball at the corner. He was letting them know that it was clear, and that it was time to move out.
'So, what should I chose?' the mind was telling her one think while her heart desired to something else. 'What wouldl daddy say? He always taught me to think logically…'
April jerked her hand out of Saber's who stopped in surprise. She only her head in regret, and turned around to walk back to her cell.
Saber Rider, though, caught her back and was forced to drag her away from this dark place. She struggled, managed to run back to her cell before slamming the door shut. At that noise, a guard appeared, but finding nothing, he then returned back to his post.
April collapsed against the door as she slowly slid down to the floor. She was praying them to go away while she still had the strength to restrain herself. She understood now that she was alone in this. Silence soon engulfed the room before she broke down into sobs. Why did she always have to do the right thing, and not what her heart wanted?!
Minutes, she fell into a fitful sleep as the pills finally kicked in.

Not long before dawn, a shadowy figured had slipped into the cell, and the sleeping April from it. It was the only moving thing in the entire building. Once they got out in the fresh air, he finally took off his gas-mask. Jesse Blue smiled at how easy it had been to accomplish his little plan. It would be a long time before the sleeping gas would wear off from the prison building. And then, when they realized that their prisoner was gone, they would be long gone. They were going to be so disappointed to find that the most dangerous Earth criminal April Eagle had vanished on her day of execution. What name would she was christened to in the news?
Jesse Blue carefully put April in the space behind the pilot seat. Two minutes later, the Badlander lifted from the park opposite to the mayor office. None of the alarm systems spotted him as he left the planet easily.
