House Tyrell
The Lords Of Highgarden
Growing Strong
The Tyrells rose to power as stewards to the Kings of the Reach, to whom my house once swore fealty. The Reach Kings' domain ranged from the fertile plains of the southwest from the Dornish marches and Blackwater Rush to the shores of Sunset Sea.
Through the female line, they claim descent from Garth Greenhand, gardener King of the First Men, who wore a crown of vines and made the land bloom. When King Mern. the last of the old line, perished on the Field of Fire, his steward Harlen Tyrell surrendered Highgarden to Aegon Targaryen, pledging fealty. Rewarding him, Aegon granted the House Tyrell the castle of Highgarden and dominion over the Reach. The Tyrell sigil is a golden rose on a grass green field. Their words are Growing Strong.
The present Lord of Highgarden, Lord Mace Tyrell, fought for the Targaryens during Robert Baratheon's Rebellion. He and his liege man, Lord Paxter Redwyne of the Arbor, laid a siege at Storm's End, which was under Lord Stannis Baratheon's command, until the besieged were almost down to eating their dead. It took near a year until Lord Eddard Stark came to lift the seige. As it stands, the Tyrells can field more men in war than any of the other Great Houses.
