Over one and a half centuries ago, the Decimviric Emperor secluded the best genetic engineers on his central military bases. Their assignment had been to perfect the genetic coding for a race of perfect military commanders and troops.
Nearly fifty years later, Dr. DuJuan Bakkar perfected
the coding, and the first generation was bred. Of the
10,000 first generation Bakkese, sub groups were bred to excel in different specialties. Tactics, medical, combat, piloting, electronics and command among them. Under secured orders, Dr. Bakkar also bred five first generation with recessive genes. Their strengths unknown to anyone else.
Using human stock, the scientists improved upon the
intelligence, health and overall physical appearance. The Bakkese (named for the doctor who perfected their coding) habitually scored nearly twice the percentages in skill and intelligence tests over standard humans.
Given a natural immunity to every disease encountered
by humans, they could enter quarantined zones with no ill effects. Their immune systems were designed to learn, saving years of research when they encountered new diseases.
Once inflicted with a disease for which they had no
immunity, their immune systems immediately isolate, break down, then defeat the invading disease.
The Bakkese were also given increased pain inhibitors.
Able to withstand higher levels of pain, they could spend longer amounts of time on front lines.
Also included in their encoding were increased reflexes, increased memory recall and exclusive breeding--making half breeds impossible.
As the first generation matured, natural reproduction
provided the second generation. Undetected until it was too late to change the coding, the second generation's genetically-induced loyalty had changed. When the second generation reached maturity, they rebelled against the Decimviric Army and first Bakkese, destroying all but a handful of the first generation.
The second generation took to the illegal shipping
lanes, preying upon the smugglers and other pirates who used them. Their improved intelligence, resilience and abilities giving them a great advantage over the smugglers.
Finally forced to admit defeat, the Decimviric army
took to the illegal shipping lanes, eventually wiping out the second generation of Bakkese.
Because of their heavy accents, survivors of the battle
were easily tracked down and executed. The Decimviric
purges of the Bakkese continued for over two decades before the race was finally declared extinct.
Because of the problems with the Bakkese, genetically
altered species are summarily executed upon detection in major cities.
Tests run by independent researchers have indicated
that inter-generational Bakkese (bred between sequential generations) cannot deal with the conflict of genetic shifting and eventually end up insane. Bakkese bred between generations, skipping one in between (ex: crossing first and third generation) results in higher rates of violent insanity.
While the first generation's loyalty was dedicated to
the Decimviric Emporer, the second generation's loyalty
shifted to the preservation of their own generation. The third generation appeared able to give total loyalty to any person or cause they believed in, and once given, that loyalty was absolute. The fourth generation's loyalty went to each Bakkese as an individual. The fifth generation's loyalty has yet to be mapped. Generational rundowns have shown the alterations continue to shift through the 120th
generation, at which point the Bakkese genetics will be
99.9% identical to humans.
