Edgar Allan Poe was born on the 19th of january in 1809 to the actress Eliza Poe and her actor husband David Poe Jr. Before Poe had turned three, however, he and his siblings were orphaned and he was put into the custody of a Richmond couple by the names of John and Fanny Allan. The couple were not particularly fond of Edgar and never officially adopted him, and only took him because neither of the families who had taken his brother and sister could afford to keep him. A few years later the Allans moved their family, and Edgar, to London.
It is here that the dark, deeply rooted pshycological issues that made Poe such a successful writer began. While his foster parents were finally becoming pleased with Edgar due to his academic progress, Edgar recalled his time in England as lonely and unhappy. Most people close to the Allans completely ignored Edgar's very existance
In 1835 after leaving UVA, spending time as a cadet in West Point and publishing a few works Poe, who had moved back to Richmond, married his cousin, Virginia, who was only thirteen years old.
