His Effects on literary styles
Poe published 73 short stories in his lifetime and over fifty of his poems also appeared in magazines, papers and poetry books. Most, if not all of these works contained a dark and mournful texture that Poe was known for, but which was a far call from the traditional American literature.
Such literature, which was lacking the views and deep thoughts of the tortured young soul, often came from the desks of older, more educated authors who didn't pull their stories, as poe did, in the resesses of a deeply deranged mind.
Poe is believed to be the first author to master the pshycological thriller and other such writing styles that reflected his disturbed personality. His short story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is sometimes considered the first 'detective story.' Though surely it was not the last, as many American and other writers have followed that trend in later years.
