THE COUNCIL FOR PEACE AND SECURITY VOTES FOR UNILATERAL WITHDRAWAL FROM SOUTH LEBANON

THE COUNCIL FOR PEACE AND SECURITY, A PUBLIC BODY OF 1200 RETIRED HIGH RANKING I.D.F OFFICERS AND OTHER DEFENSE ESTABLISHMENT PERSONNEL, VOTED YESTERDAY TO ADOPT A RESOLUTION CALLING FOR A UNILATERAL WITHDRAWAL OF THE I.D.F FORCES FROM SOUTH LEBANON.

The resolution reads: "The council recognizes Israel's army strength and capability to defend its northern border and the welfare of its citizens along that border, from positions inside Israel. The council calls on the government to adopt a resolution to reposition the I.D.F along the international border. The new deployment would be in accordance with the U.N security council resolution 425 the understanding reached in the aftermath of the "Grape of wrath" operation in April 1996.

The resolution also recommends that Israel shall absorb South Lebanon army (SLA) personnel, and their families, whose life will be endangered after Israel's withdrawal.
The council emphasizes that it recognizes the government of Lebanon as "the entity responsible for the maintenance of security in the region".
