I awoke from sweet slumber,
One cold night in December,
Awoke, and called your name,
From a dream I can't remember.
Though my mind may be uncertain,
My body lies trembling yet,
My fingertips search my lips,
For the kisses soft and wet.
in what melody did I call your name?
Was it a song of lusting greed?
Nay! For heart it beats with knowing,
It was a hymn of loving need.
Upon waking I spoke a single word,
Yet, did I speak while I was sleeping?
For my throat is weak and parched,
And I feel I should be weeping.
I search my bed, for you my love,
Your arm, your cheek, your chest,
But I am left with only empty sheets,
To pull toward my breast.
I thought I'd die from needing you,
That cold night in December,
When I awoke and called your name,
From a dream I can't remember.
