Pet
Pet was formed in July 1993, when guitarist Tyler
Bates was introduced to
vocalist Lisa Papineau by his brother Ed, who saw
her perform at a local
benefit show. Within twenty minutes of their initial
meeting, Lisa and Tyler had
written a song entitled "Big Pink." "We barely talked,"
says Lisa of that day.
"We just sat down and started writing. There was
nothing to say, really. It just
happened immediately." Inspired, they decided to
form the band Pet. Tyler
called his long-time friend and collaborator, drummer
Alex LoCascio, and
asked him to play on some Pet demos. "Tyler played
a few songs for me over
the phone. I was blown away and had to be part of
it," Alex recalls. "The
feeling of the sessions was incredible. When Tyler
and Lisa asked me to be a
member of Pet, I flew home, packed up my stuff, and
moved to L.A."
Tyler was raised in Chicago, where he began playing
saxophone at the age of
nine. He later switched to guitar upon hearing the
Kiss album, "DESTROYER."
Tyler left a career as a stock options trading firm
manager to pursue music full
time, playing live gigs and teaching guitar. While
living in L.A., he has also
been working as a producer and film composer.
Raised in New England, Lisa's early ventures on the
flute and oboe led her to
songwriting. She has played with several other bands,
including a stint as
founding member of the group The Sissy Bar, and she
continues to collaborate
on various musical projects. Frequent cross-country
travel provides Pet's songs
with much of their lyrical content.
Another Chicago native, Alex began his formal musical
training at the age of
seven. While constantly seeking creatively challenging
situations, he toured the
world with several gospel and southside Chicago R&B
artists, acquiring the
experience that has endowed Pet with its own unique
rhythmic identity.
Pet began playing shows throughout Los Angeles in
the summer of 1994.
Sessions for the group's self-titled Igloo debut
began last winter in Ireland and
were completed in L.A. in their home studio. The
album, produced by Tyler
Bates and executive produced by Tori Amos, is the
first from Tori's newly
launched Igloo label and is released via TAG/Atlantic.
Pet's songs revolve in and around rhythm-based pop
structures that
simultaneously implode and explode with unexpected
"Incredible Hulk"-like
transformations. Dark, disturbing, and volatile,
the band's music is an organic
release of the mild-mannered, whose fragile remains
consist of sweetness and
beauty.
The band regards "PET" as the defining document of
what they've
accomplished in their first three years. As the group
evolves, their friendship
provides a safe place for spontaneity in their creative
process. "The beauty of
Pet is that there is always a new twist or turn in
the road," says Tyler. "Nothing
is par; for us that's the best feeling in the world."
The new Igloo Records label was founded by Atlantic
recording artist Tori
Amos and her manager, Arthur Spivak. The label's
recordings will be marketed
and distributed worldwide by The Atlantic Group,
with the self-titled debut
album from Los Angeles-based band Pet album being
released via Atlantic's
TAG division. "PET" is Igloo's first release, and
was Executive Produced by
Ms. Amos.
