The Tazewell County ESDA, Search Team

A few years back after problems that came to light due to the fact that there was no resource in Tazewell County for a Certified SEARCH TEAM, or a K9 Search Team. it was the decission that there was a great need for a Search Team in Tazewell County. We first started by having IEMA (which no Longer does this) to come to the area and hold a 2 day school. At this time there was about 30 people that did attend this exercise and where certified. Since this time we have continued to keep at least 2, 5 person teams trained. The Team "TST" is also now trained to conduct searchs at Crime Scenes, we have added a Boat to assist the HRD Dogs to seach on water, ATV's for a faster Land Search and have also received training under the direction of the Tazewell County Corners Office, Training is reconization of Meth Labs in the field, and also Field Training with the Peoria Bomb Squad. About 4 1/2 years ago Ron Handke was appointed by the Tazewell County Board Chairman, James Unsicker to the position of SAR TEAM COORD. and K9 Coord. He Now is the appointed SAR Advisor, as we have moved on with training others to work in the Field. We continue to train the members in different aspects of search work, I am pround to say that the Team Members are doing a great job, and have shown a great interest in keep this service available to Local and Area Law Inforcement Agencies. We will only respond if called by a Law Enforcement Agency. This service can be obtained by contacting Bill Nowlin, The ESDA Director at the ESDA Office, Phone 309-477-2272 , If requesting the dog or the boat, then use my cel phone, 309-241-8144, at which time I will obtain the permission to respond.

EQUIPTMENT LIST

__________________________________________________________

This is apartial list of requited items that personel should have, while this does not represent the ultimate field pak, it will provide enough equiptment for working the scene, don't be the person that says "hey have you got a ????? that I can use", this then creates the problem of team equiptment shortages in the field, remember you may be out there for 3-4 hours!

  1. Leather shoes, not low cut type. (Leather is Better).
  2. Flashight and spare battery's, rechargeable just do not last 4 hours or more.
  3. Orange or Red Safety Vest, or the same color jacket, we try to wear Yellow to ID our TAZE. Team.
  4. Canteen, or Bottled Water carrier, you need this Summer and Winter, a high priorty item!
  5. Pocket First Aid Kit, it should contain Alcohol Swaps, Insect Repelant, Bandaids, Compress, etc.
  6. You MUST wear long pants, long sleeve shirt, you will be going thru dense thickets, thorn bushes, etc. Canvas type is better.
  7. Walking Stick, heavy duty, the Alum. type is not recomended.
  8. TEAM LEADERS need a portable radio, spare batteries, Team Members can carry a portable also, BUT the TEAM LEADER will decide who will be on the air!, the radio needs to be on the correct OPERATION FREQ, the COM. VAN people will tell you what freq. to operate on, and stay on it!
  9. Rain Coat or Rain Suit, YELLOW.
  10. Extra pair of Socks, changing will help prevent blisters, wet feet do cut it in the Winter.
  11. HEAVY Jacket, cold weather does not stop the operations.
  12. Small pocket note pad, ball point pen, this is a MUST!
  13. Bright colored CAP, Orange is better, but you need a cap, it will help your day vision and at night protect your eyes.
  14. Your TOTAL field pak weight should be under 7 lbs. Remember the Field support team should have extra's of what you need.
  15. BACK PAKS are okay, but not real handy in heavy brush, BELT PAKS are better for us.
  16. A COMPASS is a MUST HAVE, a GPS is an option, but know how to use it before the operations, a MIRROR is a MUST, just a small one for signaling
  17. MAPS, have an area map with you it will help construct the PLS and area you will work.
  18. MARKER TAPE, Red or Yellow, bio-degradeable type, tolit paper gets wet and sort of vanishes!
  19. WHISTLE, is a MUST HAVE ITEM, on a lanyard.
  20. People wearing glasses may want to use a lanyard to prevent the loss of your glasses, we have enough to do without looking for your glasses.

REMEMBER the TEAM LEADER is IN CHARGE, your job as a TEAM MEMBER is to provide the very best search work that you can.

Your TEAM EFFORTS have done a great job in the past and you will continue to do so. Team Leaders should be only choosen on there merits to do the job and not who they know.TEAM LEADER.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND TEAM EFFORT
