Remember our Clark County patriots. Some lie in national cemeteries. Some sleep in hometown graves. Some never made it home. But all have something in common. They made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country, our freedom and our quality of life.


War of 1812

Bean, Nicholas- He was born in 1760 in Buck County, PA. He moved to N.C. prior to the war. He enlisted in the North Carolina Militia. He moved to Clark County, IL in 1830. He died 8/1838, and is buried in Bean Cemetery, Parker Twp, Martinsville, IL. He also served in the Revolutionary War (See RW Index).

Bonham, Jesse- He was born 3/3/1777. Enlisted, unknown regiment. He died in Clark County, IL 11/20/1851, and is buried in Mound Cemetery, Johnson Twp, Casey, IL.

Collier, William L.
- Enlisted, unknown regiment. He died 3/29/1880 in Clark County, IL. He is buried in Ridgelawn Cemtery, Martinsville Twp, Martinsville, IL.

Dolson, James- He was born in N.Y. Enlisted, New York Militia. He came to Clark County, IL., in 1817, and died in 1828.

Frazier, Thomas- Enlisted, unknown regiment. He died in Clark County, IL., 4/10/1887, and is buried in Concord Baptist Cemetery, Westfield Twp, Casey, Illinois.

Graham, Burrill- Enlisted, 3d North Carolina Regiment (possibly cavalry), Capt. Pleasen M. Mask's Richmond Co. Company. Came to Clark Co., c1830, settling in Melrose Township. Died c1850.

Greever, Jacob- He enlisted in the 4th Militia, state unknown. He died in Clark County, IL., and is buried in Clarksville Cemetery, Dolson Twp, Marshall, Illinois.

Hardway, Andrew- Resided in Virginia at the time of the war. He enlisted at the courthouse in Franklin, VA on September 13, 1813.  He served as a private in Captain John Jehu Johnson's Company of the Sixth Regiment of Virginia Riflemen commanded by Col. Sharp.  He was discharged at Norfolk, VA on March 14, 1814. Andrew Hardway received 80 acres of land under a warrant issued on May 6, 1857 for his service in the War of 1812. He moved to Clark County, IL., c1840. He died 1/5/1871, and is buried in Baird Cemetery, Martinsville Twp., Martinsville, Illinois.

Hasten, Peter- He was born 4/19/1790 in VA. He enlisted in the Virginia Militia. He died in Clark County, IL., 7/14/1877, and is buried in Medsker Cemetery, Melrose Twp, Martinsville, Illinois.

Howe, David- He was born in 1771 in PA. He moved to OH prior to the war. He enlisted in the Ohio Militia. He lived in Boone Co., KY, prior to moving to Clark County, IL in 1837. He died 11/29/1846, and is buried in Mound Cemetery, Johnson Twp, Casey, Illinois.

Kelms, Samuel- Enlisted, unknown regiment. He died in Clark County, IL., 9/29/1856, and is buried in Medsker Cemetery, Melrose Twp, Martinsville, Illinois.

McCormick, James- Enlisted, unknown regiment. However, there is a James McCormick, from NY, on record who received bounty land in Illinois for his service in the war in Col. DePeyster's 42nd New York Militia. Another record states that he participated in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. He died in Clark County, IL., 7/11/1893, and is buried in Darwin Cemetery, Darwin Twp, West Union, Illinois. The following record was found in IL. land grants given to 1812 vets: McCormick, James, Private, De Peyster’s 42d infantry  5659  06 Feb 1818 SW4 S29 T4N R3E    James McCormick, New York     19 Feb 1818

Milligan, David- He enlisted as a sergeant in Russell's Ohio Battalion. He died in Clark County, IL., 7/11/1879, and is buried in Handy Cemetery, York Twp, Marshall, Illinois.

Payne, Ebenezer- He was a native of Preble Co., OH. He was one of the first settlers on Walnut Prairie, Clark County, IL., where he established a milling business. He married Sarah McKeen. Unknown regiment. He died 10/18/1855, and is buried in Marshall Cemetery, Marshall Twp, Marshall, Illinois. He also served in the Black Hawk War (See Black Hawk War soldiers).

Pearce, Edward- He was born in Delaware. According to one source, it states that he removed from Maryland to Pennsylvania. Enlisted, unknown regiment. He moved to Clark County, IL., in 1837. He died in 1861 and is buried in Marshall Cemetery, Marshall Twp, Marshall, Illinois. He was a farmer.

Peters, Perigrine- He was born 9/17/1777, presumably in MD. He enlisted in the 35th Maryland Militia. He died in Clark County, IL., 3/17/1847, and is buried in Mound Cemetery, Johnson Twp, Casey, Illinois.

Phillippe, George- He was born in 1792. Enlisted, unknown regiment. He died in Clark County, IL., 8/6/1874, and is buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Orange Twp, Martinsville, Illinois.

Plasters, James- He was born 6/3/1791 in VA. He witnessed the burning of the Capitol by the British, and was at Fort McHenry at the time it was bombed by the British fleet (the site that inspired the song , The Star-Bangled Banner. He came to Clark County, IL., 4/1831. He died 10/25/1882, and is buried in Livingston Cemetery, Wabash Twp, Marshall, Illinois.

Roberts, William- Enlisted, unknown regiment. He died 3/29/1880 in Clark County, IL., and is buried in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Martinsville Twp, Martinsville, Illinois.

Rogers, John- He was born in 1790. Enlisted, unknown regiment. He died 4/26/1853 in Clark County, IL., and is buried in Martinsville City Cemetery, Martinsville Twp, Martinsville, Illinois.

Roteman, Francis- Enlisted, unknown regiment. He died 2/28/1861, and is buried in Cumberland Baptist Cemetery, Casey Twp, Casey, Illinois.

Smith, Andrew- Enlisted, unknown regiment. However, there is an Andrew Smith, from MD, on record who received bounty land in IL for service during the war in Stanbury's 38th Maryland Militia. He died 11/22/1841, and is buried in Cumberland Baptist Cemetery, Casey Twp, Casey, Illinois. Records state: Smith, Andrew, Private, Stansbury’s 38th infantry     5499     20 Nov 1817 SW4 S36 T9N R2E     Andrew Smith, Baltimore, Md.     01 Dec 1817.

Spencer, Thomas- Enlisted, unknown regiment. He died in 1853 in Clark County, IL., and is buried in Old Graveyard Cemetery, York Twp, West Union, Illinois. The following record was found: Spencer, Thomas, Private, Ripley’s 37th infantry     242     29 Oct 1817 E24 S30 T3S R6W     Thomas Spencer, Stonington, Conn.     01 Nov 1817.

Thompson, Bennett- He was born in 1776 in Berkley County, VA. Enlisted, unknown regiment. He moved to OH in 1826, and to Clark County, IL., in 1850. He died, 6/31/1856, and is buried in Martinsville City Cemetery, Martinsville Twp, Martinsville, Illinois.

Thompson, John- Enlisted, surgeon, unknown regiment. He died 6/31/1856, and is buried in Marshall Cemetery, Marshall Twp, Marshall, Illinois.

Watson, Thomas- Enlisted, unknown regiment. He died 10/23/1875, and is buried in Blackburn Cemetery, Casey Twp, Casey, Illinois.

White, Thomas- Enlisted, unknown regiment. He died in Clark County, IL., and is buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Westfield Twp, Westfield, Illinois.

Wood, Chester- Enlisted, unkown regiment. He died in Clark County, IL., and is buried in Methodist Cemetery, Westfield Twp, Westfield, Illinois.
