Mexican
War
During the Mexican
War, Clark County raised a company of about seventy-five men in
Marshall, Illinois. The men had elected William B. Archer
as captain, who was a veteran of the Black Hawk War; Nicholas Hurst as 1st lieutenant, and Charles Whitlock as 2nd lieutenant.
The company left
Marshall on June 6, 1846, and was transported to Alton, Illinois in
wagons. Captain Archer presented his company to the governor on June 9,
who received them as Company Number 27. However, the
men were discharged on the 27th of June, as the state's quota had been
filled by previously accepted troops. Several members of the company
foresaw
this possibility, and rather than return home, they enlisted in other
organizations.
The state
appropriated
$600 for the company to defray the expenses
and pay for services rendered. The volunteers returned home.
