October 31

There are about 3 or 4 places with weekly lucha here in La Laguna, 5 years ago, you could find lucha in a dozen of arenas, but the state of the sport is not the same as always. Most of the cards are very weak, so the October 31 card catched my attention inmediatly: the main event consisted of Heavy Metal and Octagon vs Kicboxer and Pentagon.

But it WAS NOT a AAA offering, so I had my doubts, mainly because the rest of the card was more or less the same that the local shows, still, it was a good excuse to attend this show and see if the superstars showed up and if there is any new talent in here, besides it was in the Plaza de Toros on a Saturday...

The card was not very good promoted, it seems it was organized by a school to get funds or something like that. The attendance was, (estimated by me) of about 800, the capacity should be around 3000 or 3500.

***Piloto Negro vs Volcan Negro.- I guess Volcan was the tecnico, even if his costume looked like a Vipers outfit, Piloto had only neon orange with black pants.. This match was OK, it had some good moves, including a tope suicida by Volcan, besides that, the regular lucha moves, armdrags, hip toss, etc. Unfortunately, Being this a Mano a Mano match made it too exausting to both luchadores, so the pace was not slow, but un-steady, they will have a good secuence of move... rest a little, another secuence... etc. Still, I consider both solid performers.

***Caballeros de Plata I y II vs Some guy with an apache gimmick and a fat guy.- The fat guy was called by most of the crowd as 'lechon' (a very young pig). The tecnicos, the Caballeros, had roman-centurions gimmicks. The rudos got over with the crowd against them fast. It had some ok secuences and was fun at times, especially in a secuence that (in the third fall) had the rudos dominating, and using whips to make them crash at the center of the ring.Eventually one of the Caballeros reverses the whip... but his partner don't, so 'lechon' and a Caballero crash, the other two wrestlers get ready to do 'la estrella', but then realize that they're opponents, so jump to make the pin... on their respective team mates!!! Probably one of the funniest moments in the night.

***Mestizo and some guy vs Stuka... and 'lechon'.-So now 'lechon ' is tecnico!!! He got over as a rudo and now!! (&/%$&$) Mostly brawling, and maybe the weakest match of the night, Stuka is one of the veterans that I remember had some regional name value some (10) years ago. 'Lechon' used Superporky's (Brazo de Plata) moves a lot.

***Tiffany and Poly Star vs Pantera Sureņa and Tigresa del Norte.- I guess this show how AAA's ladies have gained popularity and recognition lately, the card said "1.- Octagon...etc 2.- Mujeres Luchadoras y tres luchas mas..." Sure, this ladies were not the AAA stars, but still they were on the semifinal match. Pantera Sureņa is another veteran, similar to Stuka, who works in the northern parts of Mexico. Poly Star, the female member of the 'Samurai Pizza Cats' has that name, so I sort of expected the luchadora to uses that gimmick, but her costume looked more to 'Tiffany' from Capcom's Rival School.

A hard fought match, it started with a lot of rudas brawling, mostly down of the ring, Pantera slams Tiffany's head to a chair... but it is Poly who goes flying and lands in the third row!!! Pretty impressive, the rudas easily win the first fall with crabs.Starting the secon fall, the tecnicas react, and brawl a little, I was starting to believe that they don't really know wrestling, but soon they start trading moves, nothing too special, but ok... The tecnicas are good looking so they are way over with the attendance. In the last fall, more solid lucha moves, including some attacks on the referee which get huge pops from the crowd!!! The rudas get DQed, and Tiffany and Poly Star take a long time before leaving, because many kids (and some adults) wanted to shake hands... and get a kiss or two (mainly from Tiffany).

***Octagon and Stuka vs Sanguinario and Ice Killer.- What!!! &%$"!!!! Well, anyway, I can not say that I was surprised, Sanguinario and Ice Killer are not AAA stars, but at least they work there, Sanguinario is one of the 'furia norteņa' members. Most of the crowd was upset, especially because many believed that it was not really Octagon under the mask, saying that he was too fat. I never thought he was fake, I have realized that he is not as thin as 6 years ago, besided his face looked as he always look, and the voice was easily recognizable. Ice Killer has a Hockey goalie gimmick, with mask and stick, he used the stick to punish Octagon thru the first fall, and the rudos win it, the tecnicos reacting in the second. Most kids are happy with Octagon. As the last fall starts, someone arrives running... it's Heavy Metal!!! The crowd errupts (the kids, but mostly the girls) Tecnicos win ( they won every match) Nobody cares about Heavy being late... Post match, Heavy challenges the rudos to a masks/hair match... That same night to a one fall match!!!! Of course, that won't happen, but the mayhem was enormous, the 800 felt like 8000.

So, was it worth the 20 pesos (2 dollars)? Sure.I think the main problem was the poor prommotion. Having made it right, it would have been full house, Heavy and Octagon are enought to make it happen. I will have to especulate a lot, but was Heavy Metal late? Who knows, it doesn't make sense that he had not traveled with Octagon (and Kickboxer and Pentagon) but the attendance was so scarse that maybe the promoter had not enought money to pay them, so they worked less and the crowd got to see their heroes. So it was a good deal.
