News & Opinion

Let me start by making one thing clear... I would love to update this site all the time. If I could, this site would be your one-stop 24/7 source of everything related to Friday the 13th. However, I do have somewhat of a life outsite of the internet, and it does seem to take a lot of my time. Add to that the fact that there's really not a lot of Friday the 13th news to begin with, and it makes it tough to find worthy updates. One more factor (that you regular viewers know about) is my design fetish. When I make updates, I like to make new graphics, new pages, new site layouts, etc... all at the same time. This means that I often spend 3 months working on changes to the entire site just to add a message board or a link to a new website.

I've also noticed a disturbing trend popping-up in websites around the net. Sites either shut-down or start charging money for access. Even the guys at IGN.com have moved a lot of their stuff into a "subscriber's" area. Seeing as how I would NEVER charge money for anyone to look at anything on this site, I'd rather it die a horrible death before I pimped it out to the masses.

So what does this mean for you? Well, I'm going to try something new here. You are looking at it. I will attempt (I make no promises) to update this page AT LEAST twice a week - Tuesdays and Fridays - and whenever something "big" happens that warrants attention. I warn you though, this will include my thoughts and rants as well as any news I can scrounge up. If you already hate me for the opinions I've shared in the past, you will hate me even more now. And. let me add, that you are always free to e-mail me - I DO READ all e-mails - but I can't always promise a reply. If you e-mail me a question, I'll probably put a reply in here. If you just want to tell me that I suck, that's cool too. I can take it. And just to make one more thing clear; I do read EVERY post to the message board and the guestbook. So if you start a discussion there, trust me, I know all about it.

So, without any further delay, let's get started...

"Jason X" has vanished from the New Line Cinema website again. Rumor has it that it's been pushed back to 2002 now. At first, it was going to be a Summer 2001 release. Something happened, and it was pushed back to Fall 2001. Now. it's off of the charts, hidden somewhere in next summer's line-up. I basically have two reactions to this... First, I'm thinking: "Damn. That sucks." Secondly, I'm wondering if this might be a good thing. Possibly, New Line wasn't happy with the "final" version. Perhaps Crystal Lake Entertainment wanted some changes made. Either way, it looks as if the film has been handed back to the director. Now, I don't want people thinking that I'm all about guys in suits making creative decisions, but New Line has been very smart in the past when it comes to re-working a project. Anyone see "Final Destination"? As poetic as the original ending was, it really didn't maintain the feel of the film. The second ending was much more exciting and gave the movie a different feeling. (This whole story is chronicled on the DVD.)

However, we could be at the gates of Hell. If anyone has seen the Producer's Cut of "Halloween 6," you know that last minute changes can be very, very bad. The original cut of "Halloween 6" was a damn good show that could have redeemed the sins of "Halloween 5." The final cut of "Halloween: The Curse of Michael Meyers" almost killed the entire series.

A DiRTMouND'er known simply as huge horror fan found this article on Fangoria.com. Basically, Paramount has NO PLANS to release a special edition Friday the 13th DVD box set. Here's the reason: No one is asking for it! Martin Blythe of Paramount says that a few things need to happen.
1. Send a written letter to:
Martin Blythe
Paramount Home Entertainment
5555 Melrose Ave.
Hollywood, CA 90038-3197
2. Ask for the films to be restored to the their pre-MPAA status
3. Track down the directors of the films and bug them to bug Paramount to do it. This is the most difficult part, but the one that does the most good. I will try to track these people down, but I'm not sure what luck I'll have. If anyone reading this knows how to get a hold of ANY F13 director, please let me know!

Last but not least for this update, I found the following answer to the question: Why is Friday the 13th considered unlucky?

The modern basis for the aura that surrounds Friday the 13th stems from
Friday October the 13th, 1307. On this date, the Pope of the church in Rome
in Conjunction with the King of France, carried out a secret death warrant
Against "the Knights Templar". The Templars were terminated as heretics,
never again to hold the power that they had held for so long. Their Grand
Master, Jacques DeMolay, was arrested and before he was killed, was
tortured and crucified.
