The world of work is changing before our eyes. American teenagers will enter a work environment changed by machines and computers. Young people need to develop the personal awareness and self-confidence necessary to make wise career choices, nuture their skills, abilities and interests. They also need help, in order to build self-esteem, a sense of effectiveness and instill hope for a successful future.

THIS UNIT WAS DESIGNED TO:

To explore careers in some depth, with 7^th and 8^th grade students, so they will be better prepared to plan for their high school educational programs based on their interests.

To challenge students to think critically about their futures and to explore, plan and set related educational goals.

STUDENTS GOALS:

Learn how to use a self-assessment tool, to help them relate their interests to a related career choice.

Demonstrate the ability to use the computer to research career(s) on the Internet.

Develop a Career Plan.

Conduct an Informational Interview.

Write a short research career report.

My philosophy is students must engage in activities that will allow them to see the connection between school and work, in order to plan for their future career.
