Two youths ride their bikes around the town of Xena, Ohio, searching for cats to kill and sell to a local supermarket owner. Teenage girls use electrical tape to enhance their nipple size. Youths sniff glue in the woods. A boy talks to a midget on a couch. Welcome to the world of Gummo, an original look at alienation. It's hallucinatory tone and sketchy, unstructured episodes capture the feeling of youth on the edge. Although fiction, Gummo has the appearance and feel of a documentary shot and edited by an experimental filmmaker; i.e. someone who is concerned not just with the investigation of content but of form as well. Unlike a conventional film, in Gummo, we don't / can't know where we're going.
