Barnett Family History



John Barnett: Was born in Virginia of Scotch parentage. Wrote a book on the treatment of diseases. Was a Revolutionary War soldier and surgen under General Greene. Took part in the Battle of Cowpens, in South Carolina.

James Barnett: Son of John. Native of Virginia. Was a surveyer early on, then a farmer.

John Barnett: Son of James. Born in Old Dominion, moved to Bourbon Co., and married Sally Kinney. Their children were:

1. Robert F. Barnett (1807-1871): Son of John. Married Margaret Mills, daughter of Nathan Mills.
2. Franklin Barnett (1808-1871)
3. Alexander L. Barnett (1810-1886): Was born in Bourbon Co. on Oct. 10, 1810. Was a planter and a slave-holder, but was later convinced that slavery was wrong and he freed his slaves. In 1832 he came to DeWitt Co. and married Elizabeth H. Hall (2/28/1813-12/7/1893) who was the daughter of Mahlon Hall. They had twelve children, three of which died at birth.
1. William B. Barnett (8/21/1835-9/14/1898): Married Sarah E. Duncan. She was born near Lexington, KY. on 8/29/1832). Her parents were Samuel and Mary (Cockrell) Duncan.
1. William Alexander Barnett: Took a course at Illinois Wesleyan University beginning in Sept 1879. On 10/17/1883 he married Lucy J. Moore, daughter of William and Hannah (Wright) Moore.

3. Eliza Barnett (5/13/1838-9/27/1839)
4. Cassander Barnett (2/29/1840-?)
5. Sarah Barnett (11/19/1841-10/16/1864)
6. Juliet Barnett (11/2/1842-?)
7. John Barnett (11/10/1845-11/19/1900)
8.,9.,10. Triplets; 1 boy, two girls, who all died at birth (1/29/1848)
11. Alexander Barnett (11/25/1849-?)
12. Nancy Barnett (10/15/1851-9/18/1853)
4. Maria Barnett (1812-?)
5. Juliette Barnett (1814-)
6. Elizabeth Barnett (1816-1862)
7. James Barnett (1819-1889)
