The fourth edition of Lezak's classic Neuropsychological Assessment is now available from most book suppliers, such as Amazon. It is considerably expanded (in depth and in size) and costs around $90. Highly recommended.

The December 2000 issue of Neurology contains two excellent articles which I highly recommend. The first reports on the development of Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination, a 100-point screening instrument built around the shell of the MMSE. I believe it has high promise as such, especially for research purposes when quantification is required. I have been working over the last year to develop a Hebrew version of the ACE, which I hope to norm soon. In the meantime, the entire file is available from this site. However, no direct link is listed here, in order to preserve its integrity. Qualified users interested in downloading either the original English or my Hebrew version are asked to send me an e-mail & I will send you the URL as well as a PDF format copy of the original article.

The second article reports on the development of the Frontal Assessment Battery, a bedside screen that compliments the ACE. No translation is required. Again, a PDF copy of the article will be sent upon request.

I recently discovered an excellent book published in 1996 which is both an interesting read and helps one understand the historical roots & evolution of neuropsychology over the last 140 years. The title is Classic Cases in Neuropsychology, by Code, Wallesch, Joanette & Roch; the publisher is Psychology Press.
Posted August 22, 2001; Addendum added on December 7, 2002: a second volume of Classic Cases has now been published.

The New England Journal of Medicine and other leading medical journals have become quite receptive in the last few years to research & letters on neuropsychological aspects of disease processes. I would encourage colleagues to consider submitting their research to journals they might not have otherwise considered. A good example appears in the February 2, 2001 issue of NEJM in the form of a letter describing recent findings on cortical dysfunction in multiple sclerosis, a white-matter disease. It was submitted by one J. P. Newman in response to a review article on MS. (OK, so I'm a shameless braggart. Indulge me just this once, please.)

Mesulam's classic 1985 book has been updated and published as Principles of Behavioral and Cognitive Neurology. It can be ordered from all the large internet book stores.

A good way to stay up-to-date on recent literature in clinical neuropsychology is to subscribe to the tables of contents of the leading neurology journals, which are sent by e-mail for free. Neurology, Archives of Neurology and the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry all provide them via their web sites.

Oxford University Press has published an excellent book entitled A Guide to Adult Neuropsychological Diagnosis by A. Y. Stringer, which is organized chapter by chapter according to symptom classes (disorders of alertness, concentration, stimulus neglect, stimulus imperception, spatial imperception, visual-motor integration, etc.). It contains in-depth lateralization and localization information, along with detailed references. I highly recommend it. (Posted October 10, 2000.)
Addendum added on December 7, 2002: I spoke with the publisher of Stringer's book at the 2002 National Academy of Neuropsychology meeting in Miami. I was informed that an updated version of this now somewhat dated book is in the works.

I highly recommend the following book for neuropsychologists wanting to learn more about what lies just over the line between us and them: The Neurological Side of Neuropsychology, by R. E. Cytowic, MIT Press, 1996

The New England Journal of Medicine in its December 31, 1998 edition published an excellent review article on Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease. Recommended reading. Also, for those who read fine print and are absolutely not able to get access to hard copies of the NEJM but who have Adobe Acrobat on their computers, I am willing on a trial basis to e-mail them copies of NEJM articles in PDF format. If demand is overwhelming, I'll withdraw the service, though, as I don't have enough free time to be e-mailing just because someone doesn't want to take the time to photocopy an article at his or her library.

The 1998 norms for the Raven's Progressive Matrices have been published by The Psychological Corporation. I am trying to obtain them for those who want them. In addition, McKinzey et al. in Australia report their use with the 'faking bad' norms for the RPM published by Gudjonnson et al. in the British Journal of Clinical Psychology in 1986, Vol 25, pp. 35-41 in an article in press. Details to follow.

The New England Journal of Medicine in its October 8 & October 15, 1998 editions published an excellent state-of-our-knowledge two-part review article on Parkinson's Disease. Highly recommended reading (but once again you'll have to get a hard copy, as the NEJM doesn't put review articles on its Internet site).

The May 1998 edition of The Clinical Neuropsychologist (which was published quite late and is only now appearing) contains an article entitled Internet Resources for Neuropsychologists. It contains a fairly comprehensive listing of web site addresses of interest to neuropspychologists (though not TOO comprehensive: this site, as well as some of its links on the home page, are not listed).

You may download from this site a shareware Aphasia Tutor for rehab of aphasic patients in English. It is a large file (900K) in .zip format, but I found it quite good. In principle, you have to pay a small registration fee after 1st use or unzip & reinstall it again before each use.

The New England Journal of Medicine in its March 19 & March 26, 1998 editions published a very readable two-part review article entitled "Imaging the Brain." Recommended reading (but you'll have to get a hard copy, as the NEJM does not publish review articles on its Internet site).

Joseph Harris created a web site called The Neuropsychology in Israel Home Page. While unmodified since 1997, it may contain information of interest to neuropsychologists. On it, he has also posted an article entitled Verbal & Motor Memory in Alzheimer's Disease: Release from Proactive Inhibition (no citation listed).

The 2nd edition of Spreen & Strauss' A Compendium of Neuropsychological Tests has been shipped after a long publishing delay, but is well worth the wait. I ordered mine from amazon.com & got excellent service. Price was $65 including express shipping. Their credit card ordering is through a secure server.
