Differences in Ourselves

Thanatos Gerroux

Human nature is one of those things that cannot be bypassed. Even the best of us succumb to it eventually. Human nature has many parts, but it is best to concentrate on one. The one I will try to expand on is the human need to divide ourselves.

Yes, we all do it. We all divide ourselves into categories. We say that we are in a certain age group, gender, racial stock, intelligence level, etc. Some of us try to ignore these things. We try to lie to ourselves by saying that we don't notice the fact that someone is different. Lying to ourselves is always a mistake.

Instead, it is my belief that what we are should be embraced. We should accept and love the fact that we are different. This doesn't mean that we should start wars with others because they are different, however. This is not a call for discrimination of any sort. I am merely stating that trying to ignore the fact that someone is of a different racial stock or gender is pointless. We will never actually, in the depths of our minds, forget it. We should notice the fact that others are different and move on.

While completely ignoring these things is a mistake, over-embracing them is just as bad. In classroom competitions, dividing teams into male/female is attempted. The teachers put males on one side and females on the other.

It does not take a great genius to see that this is discrimination. The teachers are trying to form a sort of statistic on which side is better intellectually or physically. Such a thing should be outlawed.

Why should it not be allowed? Because it usually leads to some sort of bombardment of the losing gender. If the girls win a competition against the boys, they'll use every effort to make sure the boys won't be forgetting it soon.

The same applies for the males. Since a male's skeletal structure is generally stronger, the males have a higher chance of winning a physical competition. When they do win, they make sure that the girls don't forget it. This is a form of discrimination and should not be tolerated or even sparked by the actions of an irresponsible teacher.

If we ever want complete equality, it is necessary to embrace our differences and make sure that we don't over-emphasize it. When that happens, we will have both the freedom to discuss our views on others openly and the ability to accept the views of others. That is the only pathway to equality.
