SEPTEMBER, 1968…
Madison waited. The room was cold, the table was hard and the paper sheet she was wearing didn't leave much to the imagination. She had been feeling run down lately. She was sure it was the stress of the new book, but it never hurt to be sure.
Dr. Bator, a tall thin woman, returned to the room holding a chart in one hand. "I have good news for you, Ms. Sage." She pulled up rolling stool next to the table. "You're pregnant."
Madison's eyes grew wide. "Pregnant? Are you sure?"
Dr. Bator smiled, "Positive. You're due in March."
"Pregnant." Madison repeated the word softly. How could that be? She and Micky had always been so careful…uh oh…except for that one time. It was the night Micky had regained his memory and they celebrated. Boy, did they celebrate, over and over and over again.
"Ms. Sage, are you alright?" Dr. Bator asked concerned.
Madison snapped herself back into reality. "I think I'm just a little shocked." She smiled, "But I also think I like the idea." Although she and Micky had never talked about getting married or having a family, they did love each other.
"Good." Dr. Bator smiled.

When Madison arrived back home, Micky was waiting in the living room. "Doll, where have you been?" He exclaimed jumping off the couch.
"I…um…had some errands to run." She wasn't exactly sure how to tell him.
He grabbed her hands and pulled her to the couch. "I've got some great news!"
"I've got some pretty good news too." She smiled bravely.
"Let me go first, I don't think I can hold it in much longer." He laughed.
"Go." She giggled at his enthusiasm.
"We're going on tour!" He yelled.
"What?" For the second time today, she was absolutely floored.
"We're going on tour in Europe!" He was practically bouncing up and down. "'Last Train' is topping the charts and we're going to promote it."
"That's so great!" She threw her arms around his neck.
"We're leaving next week." He hugged her tightly. "I want you to come with."
Her face fell as she realized that not only couldn't she go with them, she couldn't tell Micky about his baby. She couldn't tell anyone. The Monkees' career was finally taking off after all the years of blood, sweat and tears and a scandal like this could ruin them before they even got started.
"Micky, I can't. I've got too much going on here with the new book." She looked away from him so he couldn't see the pain in her eyes.
"But, doll, you have to go with us." Micky pleaded. "It wouldn't be the same without you."
"I just can't." She tried to smile. "Besides, there will be so many girls hanging around, you won't even miss me."
"I will miss you." He leaned over and kissed her deeply. "I love you."
"I love you too." She rested her head on his chest.
"I'm going to call you all the time and make sure you don't forget about me." He ran his fingers through her hair.
"That could never happen." She leaned up and kissed him. "I'll be right here when you get back."
"Good." He smiled. "Hey, didn't you have something to tell me?"
"Oh, forget it, it was nothing." She curled up next to him.

Mike walked in Madison's front door. He needed to borrow an iron because he was taking Samantha out for dinner that night to celebrate the tour. He had already asked her to go with them and she said yes almost immediately. He heard Madison was on the phone and didn't mean to eavesdrop, but it couldn't be helped.
"Yes, doctor…I feel fine…No, I haven't been sick at all…Okay, see you in two weeks." She hung up the phone.
"Doctor?" Mike said from behind.
Madison jumped, "Mike, you scared me to death." She turned around to face him. "Micky told me about the tour, I'm so happy for you guys."
"Don't try to change the subject, Maddie." Mike said sternly. "What's with the doctor?"
"Its nothing." She lied. "I just went in for a check up this morning."
"Then why do you have to go back in two weeks?"
"You sure ask a lot of questions." Madison snapped.
"Look, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have listened in." He replied. "Maddie, are you pregnant?"
Madison looked down at the floor giving it much more attention that it deserved. "Yes." She said softly.
"Have you told Micky?"
"No!" She stated. "And you're not going to tell him either. In fact, you're not going to tell anyone."
"Maddie, he has the right to know." Mike argued.
"I know he does." She went over and sat down on the couch. "And I will tell him, after the tour. If something like this got out right now, it could ruin everything for the band. The press would have a field day." She looked up at him. "Besides, if he found out, he would want to cancel the tour and stay here."
"You could get married." Mike replied.
"A baby is not a good reason to get married. I want this baby more than anything but I don't want Micky to feel obligated." She sighed.
"Maddie, he loves you."
"And I love him. Now promise me you won't tell him." Her eyes pleaded.
Mike hesitated for a minute, "I promise, but I don't have to like it."
"You're a good friend, Michael." Madison smiled and walked over to him.
He hugged her tightly. "Just promise me you'll take good care of yourself and my future nephew."
Maddie laughed, "I promise, but what if your nephew turns out to be a niece instead?"
He considered this for a second then a broad grin came across his face. "If he does turn out to be a she, I hope she's as smart, brave and pretty as her mom."
----------------------------------------
The following week, The Monkees headed out on their first European Tour. It would last almost six months. Madison went with them to the airport. She was comfortable in her decision in not telling Micky about their baby knowing it was best for the band.
"I can't believe you're not going to be there with us." Davy hugged her tightly.
"You, of all people, won't miss me one bit." She laughed. "Don't break too many hearts." She broke their embrace and moved in front of Peter. "Go show them how its done, big Peter."
"I will, Maddie." He kissed her cheek.
Samantha was next in line. "It's not going to be the same without you. Who am I going to shop with in all those great stores?"
"I don't think you'll have any problem doing that without me." Madison laughed hugging her friend tightly. "Just keep an eye on them for me, okay?"
Samantha smiled, "Promise." She stepped aside.
Madison looked up at Mike next. "Give em hell, shotgun."
"I'll do my best." He embraced her tightly then pulled back to look directly in her eyes. "You take care of yourself."
"I will." She smiled; thinking about how much their friendship had deepened in the last week because of the secret they shared.
The four of them moved towards the boarding area to give Madison and Micky a few minutes alone. "No good byes." Madison stated firmly.
Micky drew her into his arms and rested his cheek on the top of her head. "I'll call you every chance I get." It was something he had promised over and over the last week. "You're my girl."
"I'll always be your girl." She tightened her grip around him. "I love you."
He bent down and gave her a soft lingering kiss and she readily responded. "I love you too, doll."
"Go get famous." She gently pushed him away trying desperately to hold back her tears.
Micky went, walking down the airplane corridor. He turned around once more to look at her. Madison touched her fingers to her lips and blew him one final kiss goodbye then quickly turned around so he wouldn't see her cry.
