silverchair Go Gold!

silverchair Go Gold!

Yet again, heaps thanx to Brooke, the saint of the news for this article.
My favorite part of this article is the fact that it's 20 of the most common facts you need to know about the band. Well, there are one or two legitimate ones, I suppose.

According to some they're the best in the world- to others they're just a blatant Pearl Jam and Nirvana rip off. One thing we do know is that right now silverchair is the biggest band in the land, and the boys are only 15 years old! Here's 20 things you need to know about them.

)silverchair is...cute. [note from me: oh, geez! Wow, that was too cool for me!] Vocalist/guitarist Daniel Johns, bassist Chris Joannou and drummer Ben Gillies.

)They've known each other for years and began playing their instruments when they were in primary school- not that long ago!

)The three yong rockers started playing in a band together in 1992, never dreaming they'd be mega-famous in three short years.

)They first gained national attention when they won Youthrock '94, running off with $1,500 of musicial equipment for their school [note from the queen: wow, what a gifr! Benefitting school! Wow, what lucky guys ;)] and a day's recording in a professional studio.

)They also won a national demo competition conducted by Nomad on SBS. The prize was a full day in JJJ's studio to record the winning song.

)That track, Tomorrow, became the most requested song on the station, and led to hysteria not seen since (can we say it?) The Beatles! [note from me and Brooke, the saint of this page, Why can't they say it???]

)They were also called innocent criminals when they first got together but changed their name when they got nation wide attention.

)[note from me: Printers don't like me, so I don't have these down right this second. I know you're dying to know what they are, right?? ;)]

)

)

)The object of a major bidding war, the guys were head-hunted by a few different labels. They wanted to be on the same label as their heroes You Am I, but their A&R dude just wasn't interested- fool! [note: yeah, like what a fool! like, why the hell didn't he, like, choose them? <--Sorry, I couldn't help myself =)]

)Tomorrow was also the first number single by an Australian band in ages.

)They were one of the most popular bands at the Big Day Out, the travelling outdoor rock fest that toured the country [note from Brooke, the only other person you will see a note from besides me:....and New Zealand. They never mention New Zealand...and Sarah says "I totally agree!!!] last summer.

)On the other side of the coin, they were unceremoniously booed off stage when the three youngsters supported Pantera in Newcastle [note from the note girl: I can just see this. All these heavy metal type people booing the 'chair, saying, "Ya' pansies! Play some harder stuff!!!" You can't tell me you don't see this?]

)According to the boys, their best and favourite gig was at their record launch at the Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle.

)Some of you would have heard Paul Keating announce on JJJ that silverchair is one of his favourite bands. Trying to be hip or what? [Question: K, who is this Paul guy?? I assume a DJ on JJJ. But why is this supposedly important? Anyone??]

)They're vert selective about doing interviews. We're not sure if they hate answering loads of questions of they're just shy. [me again: Let's think abou that one. Ben being shy..yup. That's it. *that was sarcasm, I hope you understand*]

)When they signed their record deal, they were taken out to dinner- anywhere they wanted for free. Did they choose a posh restaurant like Maxims or Doyles? Nope, they went for KFC and were mega-impressed when they were told they could eat as much as they wanted. [Hi again: Doesn't this sound like typical 'chair behavior??]

)Their mums (who also manage the golden trio), each got a new kitchen when their sons signed that now famous record deal.

)[One last time: Now, this is exactly one of the prime reasons I happen to "idolize" the 'chair]So why do people like silverchair? "They get inspiration to start a band and they know if they start at a young age, it's possible to get somewhere." Ben reckons. [I lied: I love how Aussies and perhaps NZ's always use reckon. Here in America, only hicks say that. I think it sounds sooo cool when other people say it. But that's just me.]
