Aussie Sensations

(from Feb. '96)
silverchair are keeping their new-found stardom very much in its proper perspective. These 16-year-old rockers have witnessed their debut album, Frogstomp, sail to the top of the charts throughout the world, yet their paramount priorities remain just having a good time. "People have started to act a little differently towards us," said guitarist/vocalist Daniel Johns. "Even at school our friends have wondered what's happened to us; the answer is that nothing is happening to us. We're the same people we were a year ago."

(from March '96)
Those 16 year-old Australian upstarts have now had the first taste of big-time tour action following their State-crossng excursion with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Vocalist/guitarist Daniel Johns was more than a bit shy when discussing the hordes of groupies that descended upon the band at virtually every tour stop- perhaps because the band member's parents toured with the band throughout the road trek. "They've really been helpful to us," Johns says somewhat sheepishly. "We're very happy to have them with us."

School Bells Ring

(from May '96)
When it's Spring here, it's fall down in Australia-- time for all teenagers to get back in the classroom. Apparently, among those teens are the members of silverchair who had to put an end to their highly successful world tour in order to go back to school. With all the money these Aussie sensations made over the last year, why don't they just buy their old school and burn the joint down? [hey, they can buy my school too! niles north high school!!!!! burn baby burn!]

What a relief

(from June '96) ~ [this is really funny, IMO ;O)]
A top administrator in the Newcastle, Australia school board assures us that the members of silverchair all passed their year-end finals- though Daniel barely squeaked by in chemistry. Ohh...thank goodness!

Back Home in Australia

(from August '96)
The boys in silverchair- all fast approaching their 17th birthdays [note: um, no? Daniel was 17 at the point! Silly magazine!] - have set to work on their second album. While they're still trying to live with the difficult task of balancing their rock and roll work load with school requirements that their parents still demand they adhere to, it appears that silverchair's still untitled second disc will be released by late summer- approximately a year after their debut effort, Frogstomp emerged as one of the year's most unexpected success stories.

Down Under Blunder?

(from September '96)
We keep hearing reports that the boys of silverchair have been "acting up" back in their Australian homeland. What exactly does "acting up" imply? Apparantly nothing too juicy. It seems that the lads have basicially told their parents that they've had it with school and that they want to focus on their musical career full-time. Considering that Ben, Chris and Daniel are now 17- and millionares to boot- it's hard to imagine their mums makin' too much of a stink over theri decision.
