Surya Bonaly

"Color is a big part of Surya Bonaly's persona."-Terry Foster

Surya (pronounced Sue-ree-ah) Bonaly is one of the most gifted skaters in the world, equally popular in Europe and North America. World Junior Champion and five-time European Champion, she did not start to skate until the age of 12, following success as a world-class gymnast. Her meteoric rise to skating stardom is testimony to her talent and extraordinary skill.

A torn Achilles tendon that required surgery, kept her off the ice most of the 1997 season and hindered her Olympic appearance. Now a professional, she is back in top form and trains in the States part of the year with the famous coach Tatiana Tarasova, and along side rink mate Alexei Yagudin.

Known as a superb jumper, she is the only woman to incorporate gymnastic moves in her exhibition programs, including a back flip landed on one foot. Surya is a dynamo of energy and power and has pushed the technical side of the sport for women to new heights.
