Naomi Nari Nam started her skating career at age 5 when her grandparents took her to an ice rink in Costa Mesa, California. She was so tiny that the rental skates didn't even fit, but she wore them anyway. The first time she stepped onto the ice, she had fallen in love with it. She skated faster than most of the skaters her age. She fell a lot, but didn't care. When it was time to get off, Naomi didn't want to get off.
She loved skating so much. Since she was so taken with ice skating, her parents asked if she wanted to take lessons. Of course she did! Soon she started skating lessons with coach Jennifer Mangelpelo. She was soon good enough to compete, and won her very first competition!
Over the next few years Naomi won many more competitions. She switched to a more well known coach, John Nicks, in order to excel in skating. He had coached many successful skaters. Naomi won the 1997 National Novice title and now she is the reigning U.S. Senior silver medalist. Naomi now hopes to medal at the World Junior Championships so she can be eligible for Senior lady international competition.
