Moving to Las Vegas in 2000 was something that'll stay with me forever. Sure the casinos were impressive, and I can still hear the bells and whistles. But when you live there, you see a lot more. |
Nearing Mile Post 335This is a Union Pacific Railroad mixed train from California, headed northbound toward Salt Lake City in the late summer of 2002. |
Also Headed Toward M.P. 335Here's a couple a guys headed toward the railroad on their way to the hobo camp. |
Downtown YardThis a picture taken at the Downtown Las Vegas rail yard. The Clark County building is the orange-brown "pueblo" on the right. (I was not hopping trains, by the way – just taking pictures of trains :-) |
Las Vegas StationThis picture was run thru a bit O'Photoshop. This is the Downtown Las Vegas train station. Modern Las Vegas got its start here in the early 1900s on two foundations – 1) the Warm Springs stop on the Old Spanish Trail; and 2) the Railroad that ran between Salt Lake and Los Angeles. While Vegas no longer has regular scheduled passenger rail service, the station is still active for charter passenger & extra trains. It is located just west of the Plaza Hotel (right side of photo). The Las Vegas Club is in the left, and Binion's Horseshoe is the light seen upper in-between. |
Fremont StreetThis is a picture looking east down Fremont Street, taken from a parking garage on the block just east of Las Vegas Boulevard. |
South Casino Center BoulevardA bit a juxtaposition here: A bail bond billboard stands in the foreground, with the Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church just beyond it; the the tall building on the right is the new Justice Center, which was still under construction at the time. |
Bridger Avenue & Casino Center BoulevardThis is "A Chapel by the Courthouse," which is located just north of the picture above. The Courthouse was located a block further east, and the downtown county jail, as you might guess, was also located in this area. |
