It's about time! Thank you!
By Richard Faykosh
Hello again!
The new news is that the land across from the Elgin Mental Health center could become the new homeless shelter. This is great news. But now I would like to know if its going to be a one floor deal or multi floors. I would hope that it’s a one-floor deal that would be done with adding floors when needed. With that in mind they would not have to rip it down to add floors. They could just add floors as needed.

Back when I was homeless I went to a Public Action to Deliver Shelter meeting I brought up at the time that the homeless needed more then a shelter. They needed a center, one that would not only give shelter winter and summer. But one that would connect the homeless to other resources to get the full benefit of help, To become the place for not only one meal a day that the homeless now receive to three meals a day.

A place where they could obtain good jobs, And education to better them selves for better paying jobs, Job training programs as well as education courses to build upon.

The staff at P.A.D.S at the time said that that was way too much. But it was needed then. Now they have taken the issues that I brought to them at that meeting. And they will adapt these things (hopefully) into their plans. I hope they take my ideas and put them into effect. As well as having AA put in an office with counseling to benefit those with substance abuse that really need to get help. Perhaps the Detox system could be there also with not the 6-month program that they now offer. BUT a new one year program with job training and placement to better help those in the program with a year counseling and weekly monthly checks on their clients. So since people are taking my ideas perhaps someday I might get the whole system revamped and made better.

So in closing I would like to thank all those people that have taken my ideas as theirs and have started to do something with them. Thank you! You have proven to me that I was right! All along..

STORY ABOUT Saul, One OF OUR HOMELESS
By Richard Faykosh

Like the homeless that helped at ground Zero went back to there underground holes and back to being homeless. One told me that it was good to do something for the right cause. But that cause is now over. And he must now fend for himself whatever way he can. He told me that he would make money from getting things from the trash as well as from what little scraping he can do. If he needs to eat he'll go to a mission or something like that. But most of these homeless men that helped at Ground zero will go back scraping and trying to put there lives together. In the months ahead they will be beaten by thugs and by people stealing from theses homeless people. Yes! There are people that would bend so low as to beat and rob the less unfortunate. Some of these people will die in the streets if not by someone's hands by the upcoming cold winter. As one dies there are many that become homeless and have to learn to survive in a city unforgiving. So he will be forced into doing what ever he needs to do to survive.
Collecting cans and selling them as well as finding useful things in the trash and selling them on the streets to make his living. And to live a life that involves danger upon every moment of his life. But after several months after Saul and I completed this last bit of the story. Saul was found in a lonely alley. He was stabbed six times and was left to die. There is belief that some street gang was trying to get money and information on where other homeless people stay.
Continued next month.

POEMS OF THE STREET
POEM # ONE
IT WILL

BY R. J. 8/29/02

The busy hustle,
The day begins,
Yet for some,
It will never end.

The day started busy,
The progress is insane,
Yet for some,
It will stay the same.

The day started slow,
And progressed in time,
Yet for some,
It will not be.

The day started in labor,
Yet moves into a rush,
Then its mellow,
Back to a push.

Each day is different,
Never dealt out the same,
Yet for some,
It will.

POEM # TWO
TIS THE
by R.J. 8/14/02

'Tis the dusk of my existence,
The rambling of my life,
To look back is Golden,
Forward in jest.

'Tis the dusk of my existence,
The growing of my life ,
To look back in honor,
Forward in a smile.

'Tis the dusk of my existence,
The learning of my life,
To look back in pleasure,
Forward in knowing.

'Tis the dusk of my existence,
The growing of this soul ,
To look back in reflection,
Forward in youth.

I've past old…
