Who decides who we are going to be as people? Are we destined to be what society wants us to be? Does fate really exist? Does love exist? I heard a very disturbing philosophy on love today. The person argued that life is about you as a person. Love is a selfish idea that he believes is based on you "loving" a person based on the fact that he or she makes you feel good and worthy as a person. The act is not based on whether or not you love the person in return. This disturbs me greatly. Love is not a selfish act. The parties involved are giving a piece of themselves to the world with the risk of being hurt or even worse, not loved in return. Giving a person your love is perhaps the best and closest thing to God we can achieve in our life on earth.

I believe love is real and even though I can understand where this person was coming from, I don't embrace his belief on this topic. All I know is I never want to become that self-centered, vain, and uncabable of emotion as he has become. Also for general knowledge, the source of this disturbing view of love is not anyone I am even remotely close to, just an instructor in a few of my classes.
