The Truth Is Out There
An FBI X-File is opened by an unseen man. The file is that of Fox Mulder and it contains information on Mulder as well as photo ID. The voice of Morris Fletcher is heard as he speaks of the life of Fox Mulder. Fox Mulder lead a perfectly normal life as a boy, until 1968. We see a home video of a young Fox and young Samantha Mulder, dressed for Halloween. Fox is dressed as Spock from Star Trek, and Samantha is dressed as a fairy. Fox looks at the camera and one of his Spock ears falls off. He bursts into tears and runs off. Then his mother, Teena, comes into view dragging him back into frame but Fox stomps on the ear and runs off. Morris tells us that there may have been infidelity in the marriage, and that there were rumors of another man. Teena waves off-screen and the camera pans across to reveal a man sitting on the couch, lighting a cigarette - the Young Cigarette Smoking Man. He smiles and waves the camera away.
Morris then tells us that Fox's sister was abducted by aliens, and we fade to a trophy wall which has pictures and momentos from Mulder's life and career. His 1986 Oxford diploma, and the such. Morris says that he enveloped himself in his work to take his mind off of his sister's disappearance, but that she could not stay out of his mind for long. We see Mulder's "I WANT TO BELIEVE" poster and other pictures of UFOs, bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster and other paranormal activity. Morris says that Mulder went out of his mind and lives like a monk, saying he has a great-looking but weird partner. He remarks that, "if they had any sense at all, they'd be boinking each other's brains out."
Now we are in Mulder's old office, before it burned down, and it is empty. We see an X-Files cabinet with folders on top. There are reconstructed files and Mulder's own file is among them. Morris tells us that Mulder threw away a great career, respect, and good friends, and now lives a lonely life, "shaking his fist at the sky." We see a man going through Mulder's file, but only from the shoulders down. His FBI ID tag says he is Fox Mulder, but we pan up to see Morris Fletcher, looking exactly like Mulder. Morris says that Mulder is "one step away from pushing a baby carriage filled with tin cans down the street." He then goes on to say that all that will change.
On a desert highway, a Jeep Cherokee's rear door is opened and soldiers throw Mulder (in Morris Fletcher's body) into the back seat of the Jeep. Before he is pushed in, he yells to Scully that "He's not me!" Scully stands next to her rental car and watches Mulder being dragged away, but she is not happy about it. Her gut instincts tell her so. She looks to Howard and Jeff, two Men In Black, and they look at her before getting into their own identical Jeep. They leave.
Inside Area 51, Mulder is being led down a long hall in leg irons. He is inside a maximum security area, is forced into a small cell, then locked inside the cell. He looks out of the plexiglass window to see Jeff, the MIB, a friend of Morris who Mulder now looks like. He yells for Jeff to get him out, and that he doesn't know what's going on. Jeff ignores him. Mulder hears a chuckle and looks through the plexiglass into another cell where he sees a woman. She says that they have both "disappeared." She is Lana Chee, now Robert McDonough. She lights up a cigarette and Mulder asks who she is. She tells him her call sign is "Maverick." He doesn't understand because she is too old to be a pilot. But the pilot from the crash in the previous episode, and the old woman, have swapped bodies.
Meanwhile, Morris is playing computer golf in Mulder's office. Scully enters and walks across from Mulder's desk to her own. She starts to gather her things into a box and Morris asks what Kersh told her. She says that he said she was insubordinate, and that the FBI doesn't need agents who aren't team players. She has been suspended from duty - without pay - for two weeks. She begins to walk out the door when Morris asks her to come to his (Mulder's) apartment for dinner at eight o'clock. She says okay.
Inside Wegman's office, Back in Area 51,Wegman is sitting at his desk, Mulder in front of it, the two policemen at his side. Jeff is also there, and asks why Mulder didn't tell them what was going on from the start. Mulder does not know what they are talking about (Jeff and the other Area 51 employees think Mulder is really Morris). Mulder asks what he means and Jeff taps on a flight recorder in the office, telling Mulder that it is the wrong one. Wegman tells Mulder that Mulder (whose body Morris is in) replaced the recorder. Morris was running a scam on the FBI but didn't let them in on it. Mulder tries to make something up and says that he didn't know if he could trust them, and that they have a security leak, and that he had to approach Scully alone in order to learn who her real contact is. Howard is also in the room, and he asks why he didn't tell them afterward. Mulder says he knew they wouldn't believe him. Howard asks if Morris (Mulder) has the real flight data recorder and if it is safe. Mulder says that it is. Howard then asks if Morris (Mulder) will bring it back. Mulder replies that he will, but he doesn't know how he will do that.
In Mulder's apartment, Morris (as Mulder) enters and sets down some grocery bags - in which are ingredients for a meal and some champagne. He looks for the bedroom, but finds a cupboard which he opens and piles of old files, UFO pictures and pornography magazines fall onto him. The bedroom is filled with useless junk.
Scully arrives at the door and knocks, and Morris opens the door. Scully walks in and sees, for the first time, Mulder's apartment clean - way too clean for Mulder. Morris shows Scully around, then opens the bedroom door and Scully says she never knew he had a bedroom. She looks around and sees a canopy bed. Morris pats the bed for Scully to come sit on it, and she does ... it turns out to be a waterbed! Scully falls back on the bed and sees a mirror on top of the canopy bed. Morris tells Scully to stay put. She does so and, after he leaves the room to get the champagne, he comes back and closes the door on us so we can not see any more.
Later, we see Morris and Scully sitting on the waterbed, Morris is trying to pop off the champagne top when Scully says, "You know what would would be really fun?" She takes out her handcuffs and dangles them in the air, he hooks himself up to the bedpost, Scully whips out her gun and aims it at him and the fun is over. She says to him that she knows that he is not Mulder, and he replies with, "Baby?" Scully says, "You 'baby' me and you'll be peeing through a catheter. You're Morris Fletcher." He admits that he is, then she asks him how to get things back to normal, he says that he has no idea, probably because he doesn't want to go back to his wife and since he was trying to get out of the Men In Black, and they wouldn't let him, this was the perfect opportunity. The phone rings and Scully forces Morris to pick it up. It is one of Mulder's contacts who says that he has the real flight recorder and Morris says that he will meet him at The Little A'Le Inn.
At the same time, Mulder and Joanne are talking and Joanne wants to make up, and go somewhere, so they decide to spend the night at The Little A'Le Inn.
At The Little A'Le Inn, Morris and Scully pull into the parking lot. Scully has her gun pointed at Morris. Mulder's contact is to be wearing a red Buffalo Bills cap and Scully stays in the car so she doesn't scare the contact off. Morris walks into the roadhouse and looks around for the red cap. He walks by Mulder and Joanne, not noticing them. Then he slows and sees what he's looking for. He walks over and sees none other than his contact, General Wegman.
When we see Mulder and Joanne, Mulder has been drinking for a while and he gets up to go to the bathroom.
Meanwhile, Wegman admits to Morris that he has sabatoged a UFO and that he is also the leak. Wegman tells Morris to look under the table, there is a brown paper bag with the fake flight data recorder in it.
Mulder tries to sneak out the back of the roadhouse, but the car is locked, and he looks around and sees Scully in the car. He rushes over to the car and hops in and she tells Mulder about Morris meeting with the contact so Mulder goes back in to find out what is going on. Mulder walks in and sees that Jeff is also there. Jeff starts talking to him, and Joanne comes up and throws white wine onto Mulders shirt, then walks out. He goes back to the bathroom, and starts to dab at his shirt, when he looks up into the mirror. He sees himself (Morris), but in different clothes. Mulder says, "So, you're the guy that wants my life. I'm assuming that includes all the ass-kickings." He then slams Morris up against the wall and Morris tries to get out of it by handing Mulder the flight data recorder. Mulder loosens up. Jeff runs out to Joanne who is crying in the parking lot. Joanne tells Jeff that Morris is having an affair with Scully, and she points to the car that Scully is in, but there is no-one in it.
Scully comes out of the bathroom the same time Morris does, they go for the back exit. Wegman takes the men outside and, looking for someone, he points to Mulder and says to detain him. The two men run at him and surround him. Mulder asks then what is going on. Jeff asks Mulder (who looks like Morris) what's in the brown bag and Mulder says that it is beer. Wegman asks if it's the flight data recorder and Mulder opens the bag and we see a six-pack of beer. Mulder and Wegman share a glance to let us know that they're in on this together. On the other side of the lot, a car screeches out of the lot and peels away.
Inside the Lone Gunman office, Langly, Byers, and Frohike are eating Huevos Rancheros when Scully and Morris knock at the door. Of course, they think that Morris is really Mulder. Scully gives them the flight data recorder and tells them that it is from Area 51. Morris is in the background looking at some of their newspapers, and he is laughing. They look at him in curiosity, Scully tells them that his name is really Morris Fletcher, and that he assumed Mulder's identity through a warp in the space-time continuum.
In Wegman's office, Mulder enters and Wegman is afraid that they'll be seen together. Mulder tells him Scully is getting the info about the flight data recorder right now, but Wegman says it's too late, and that "they" will make him (Wegman) disappear. Mulder asks why Wegman made the UFO crash and Wegman tells him that he didn't mean for it to crash but that he just wanted Mulder to see it, because he believes in Mulder's quest for the truth. In reference to the UFOs, Wegman says, "We just fly these birds - they don't tell us what makes them go. They engineer them all up in Utah." This is a hint that there are no aliens, just government projects.
Outside a gas station, Mulder is waiting at the side of the building next to his car when Scully and Morris pull up to meet him. Scully tells Mulder that the Lone Gunmen analyzed the data and that there was an anomalous event that night. Mulder wants to know how he can get back to normal, and Scully says that he and Morris have to be in the exact place where the crash and event occured for them to be switched back, if it were ever to happen again. Morris is waiting in the car playing with the radio when Scully then tells Mulder that she has been relieved of her position. Mulder can't believe it. Scully then says, "I'd kiss you if you weren't so damn ugly." She gets back into the car and Mulder watches Morris and they drive away.
Later in the day, Scully and Morris drive and she is wondering how to get Mulder back to normal. Suddenly she yells for him to stop and back up, she gets out of the car and sees the gas station that was destroyed, but it is completly intact! Then the gas station attendant that was fused on the floor, shot, and burned, steps out and welcomes Scully. She says that this place was burned down two nights ago, and he denies it, saying he doesn't know what she is talking about.
Back at the Fletcher household, Mulder is in the driveway throwing Morris' stuff into a van, when Scully and Morris pull up. Scully walks over to Mulder while Morris stays behind, not liking to be back home. Joanne comes out trying to carry a recliner and sees Scully and starts yelling at her. She finally stops and goes back to work at trying to get the seat to come out the door. Morris feels bad and goes up to her and convinces her that he really is Morris and that the other is Mulder. Scully tells Mulder that the event that caused this to happen to Mulder and Morris may be in the process of reversing itself, so the three start back to Scully's sedan, when two Jeep Cherokees pull up and Jeff and a few soldiers come out and detain the three. One soldier pops his head into Scully's sedan and comes out with the flight data recorder. On the highway, the two Jeeps pass a restricted sign, letting us know they have entered the Area 51 complex, then everyone in the two jeeps notice a roadblock ahead. Howard is at the roadblock. The jeeps stop and Jeff gets out and asks Howard what he is doing. Howard tells him he is cleaning up a mess. Mulder now understands that the warp that started all this is snapping back like a rubber band. Only they have to be in it's path when it happens. Suddenly ... there is a loud rumble. Mulder and Morris get out of the jeep and everyone raises their faces to the sky. A heat ripple washes over them and we pan to see Mulder and Morris back into their own clothes, and their own bodies.
Scully stands behind Mulder and everything is as it was before the UFO passed overhead. Mulder and Scully walk to the rental car that one of the unidentified men took from the Flecther house. Morris watches them drive away.
Later, Scully calls Morris from her desk. He thanks her for her help, and they hang up. Scully opens her desk to put a file in it and finds the four-sided coin.
MY THOUGHTS
I liked this episode but not nearly as much as the first one. I really loved the begining where they showed mulder as a kid,and said he had pissed away his life. But I thought they could have thought of a better way for it to end. I mean really how much creativity did it take to heve the whole thing just undo itself? For the most part it wasn't really that bad...
