SYNOPSIS

In 35, 000 BC, two neanderthals hunt down an alien and, while one is killed by the creature, the other kills it. However, black ooze as seen in Piper Maru, Apocrypha, Tunguska, Terma, Patient "X" and The Red And The Black crawls from the creature. Some of it enters the neanderthal, while some slips into cracks in the ground. Flash forward to 1998, Texas, and a boy named Stevie falls through a hole into the cave where the neanderthals killed and were killed. Stevie finds a skull, but steps into the black liquid and it crawls into him, clouding his eyes. Later, in Dallas, Mulder and Scully are searching a building for a bomb. Mulder finds the bomb in a soda pop machine, and the building is evacuated but it explodes, killing Mulder and Scully's S.A.C. (Special Agent in Charge). Mulder and Scully attend a hearing in Washington, and Scully notifies Mulder that she will be transferred due to the closure of the X-Files. She tells him that she would rather quit than be transferred. After work, Mulder heads for a bar and wallows in his misery. A man identifying himself as Dr. Alvin Kurtzweil approaches Mulder and, outside, tells him that he worked with his father. He goes on to say that the bomb was put there by the government to destroy a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) office because that's where the bodies of Stevie and three firemen who rescued him (and who were possessed by the black liquid) were placed. But the twist is ... they were already dead. Mulder picks up Scully and they head for Bethesda Naval Hospital where the dead bodies are kept. Meanwhile, the Cigarette Smoking Man is in Blackwood, Texas, where Stevie was killed. He notes a fourth fireman who has the liquid inside him - and the liquid is growing, mutating. At Bethesda Naval Hospital, Scully examines the bodies, and they posess symptoms which she has never seen before. As she continues to examine, Mulder heads off to find Kurtzweil. When he arrives at Kurtzweil's apartment, Mulder finds police and detectives there who claim that he was selling child pornography across the Internet. Outside, Mulder runs into Kurtzweil who tells him that it's a lie - the pornography is just to discredit him. He tells Mulder that FEMA was called to Texas because of an outbreak of the Hanta virus. But he questions why such a high-profile agency, who has the power to create its own government, would waste time on the Hanta virus. Taking heed of Kurtzweil's advice, Mulder calls Scully, who tells him that she has a meeting in the morning and that she found evidence of a virus, though it's unlike any virus she's ever seen before. Mulder tells her that they're going to Dallas, though they arrive there separately. Meanwhile, Dr. Bronschweig, the doctor in charge of the remaining fireman, is attacked by a creature - similar to that from 35, 000 BC - which has taken over the fireman's body. The Well Manicured Man receives a phone call from the Cigarette Smoking Man, who notifies him of a group meeting. At the meeting in London, the Well Manicured Man notes a video surveillance of Mulder and Scully next to the man who everyone - all of the Syndicate, and all government officials - answers to: Conrad Strughold. Strughold and the Cigarette Smoking Man notify the group of the events which have occured - that the virus now mutates its victims into new extraterrestrial beings. The group are forced to re-assess their role in the colonization. They all agree that Mulder poses a problem to their plans, so they agree to "take away what he holds most valuable - that with which he can't live without." In Texas, Mulder and Scully arrive at a park, where everything is brand new and new grass has been laid. This is where Stevie fell through the hole, and where they now meet with Stevie's friends who will not talk to them. After some persuading, the children tell Mulder and Scully that the men who told them not to tell traveled off and they show the way. They tell them that tanker trucks went in that direction, and the Agents search for the trucks. Coming to a train track, they notice the trucks loaded on the back of the train, and they follow it. They stop as the train stops - at some strange lights, only to discover corn fields with two large, glowing domes in them. Entering the domes, Mulder and Scully find them to be barren. Suddenly, hatches open and thousands of bees are released, sending the Agents running out into the fields where they are chased by two large, black, unmarked helicopters. After their encounter, Mulder and Scully return to Washington where Scully presents to Skinner and her other superior, Jana Cassidy, fossilised bone fragments which provide evidence that the bomb was to destroy the bodies of the firemen and Stevie. What we see - and what she doesn't see - is a bee inside her jacket, one from the dome which has traveled with her back to Washington. Meanwhile, Mulder checks back with Kurtzweil, who agrees with him that the bees are probably used to carry the virus. The tension builds, and after an argument with Kurtzweil, Mulder leaves for his apartment where he finds a family photo with a young Kurtzweil in the background. Scully arrives at his apartment, and, taking the opportunity, Mulder tries to convince her not to quit.As they move towards each other, posed for a kiss, the bee makes its way out of Scully's jacket and stings her. She falls to the ground, and Mulder rings an ambulance, which arrives quickly. Just as Mulder is making his way around to the driver, he realises it is the man from the bathroom who interrupted he and Kurtzweil. The man pulls a gun and the bullet fired hits Mulder, skimming his head, and sending him unconscious. Soon, the real ambulance arrives and picks Mulder up. Later that night, Mulder awakes in a hospital bed, confronted by the three Lone Gunmen - Frohike, Langly, and Byers. Mulder is able to use Byers' suit to escape from the hospital alongside Skinner who went to visit him. In leaving the hospital, Mulder sees the man who shot him heading towards the room which he was in. Outside the bar where Mulder met Kurtzweil, Kurtzweil dwells when he is approached by the Well Manicured Man. As they leave, Mulder misses them and enters the bar looking for Kurtzweil. Not finding him, Mulder exits the bar and sees a driver closing the trunk of a car. Outisde the car is the Well Manicured Man. He orders Mulder to get in. Inside the car, Mulder asks the Well Manicured Man where Kurtzweil is. The Well Manicured Man infers that Kurtzweil is in the trunk. Then, knowing that his time is almost up due to his rebelliousness towards the group, the Well Manicured Man confesses, handing Mulder an envelope containing Scully's whereabouts and the vaccine that will save her life..The Well Manicured Man pulls a gun and points it at Mulder, then turns and shoots the driver. The Well Manicured Man orders Mulder out of the car at gunpoint, and, once Mulder has exited the vehicle, it explodes. Presumably killing the Well Manicured Man and Dr. Kurtzweil. A day or two later, Mulder is in Antarctica in a snowmobile. This is where Scully was taken, the place that the Well Manicured Man gave Mulder directions to. There are more domes here, and Mulder sees the Cigarette Smoking Man leaving one of the domes. Inside the domes are rows of cryo-pods, one of which Scully is in. Locating it, Mulder injects her with the vaccine but he and Scully are almost attacked by more of the creatures who have been mutated by the virus. They run from the creatures, out of the domes. Running faster and faster, the ice begins to collapse behind them. Falling deeper into the ground, it cascades down and from it rises a gigantic UFO. The UFO hovers over the ice for a while, then it zooms off into the distance leaving them there. Days later, in Washington, Mulder and Scully's story is greeted with skepticism. Mulder, out of luck and ready to watch Scully quit, takes a seat on a park bench where he is met by Scully.Back in Tunisia, where he lives, Conrad Strughold receives a telegram from the Cigarette Smoking Man. The Cigarette Smoking Man leaves after handing Strughold the telegram. Strughold reads the telegram, crumples it up and throws it away. We manage to catch a glimpse of the telegram. It reads - X-FILES RE-OPENED. STOP. PLEASE ADVISE. STOP.
