"We do not live in this world alone, but in a thousand other worlds." - Another World Opening Line

Controversial Another World Issue
This month TAWA spent some time dealing with the controversial Another World issue on the possibility of bring Mac Cory back in their episodes for fans to enjoy.  We had a very talented writer who had an excellent story line for the resurrection of Mac Cory.  However, this issue was one that needed to be sensitive not only to the issue but to the fans.  In light of this, TAWA polled fans all over the internet to find out what the general take was on the issue.
The results came in as so:  09 votes requesting that TAWA bring Mac Cory back. (16.4%), 02 votes stating that the voter was not sure about bringing Mac Cory back. (3.6%), 44 votes requesting that TAWA not bring Mac Cory back. (80%).  As you can see from the results of our polls, TAWA has decided to let Mac Cory rest in peace; we will not be resurrecting Mac.
Spotlight on Mac Cory
By: Missy

Millionaire publishing tycoon Mackenzie Cory, father to Iris Carrington, came to Bay City to be with his grandson, Dennis Carrington, who was being treated for a heart condition, and decided to make Bay City his home.  Mac Cory was a one-of-a kind man.  He was wealthy, powerful, but not corrupt.  He had built the Cory Publishing empire from nothing.  Not only did he own Cory Publishing, but he was the driving force behind Bay City's newspaper, The Herald and at one time owned Bay City's television station, KBAY.  It didn't take long for him to become one of the leading citizens of Bay City.
He was the epitome of goodness.  He was loyal to family and friends.  He was a gentleman in every sense of the word.  He was fair and honest.  He was very handsome and charmed all the ladies.
For a while, Mac escorted Liz Matthews around Bay City...until he became interested in Rachel.  Mac knew of Rachel's "history", the whole "Steve and Alice" story, but he didn't care because he saw the "inner" Rachel...a strong-willed young woman who had great potential.
Of course, Iris did not want her father involved with Rachel.  But Iris would not get her way, in spite of the fact that she would never give up trying to break up Mac and Rachel.  Although they would separate many times and even divorce, they always ended up back together...for they were soul mates.  They had their "ups and downs" like many couples but most of these problems were caused by others who didn't want to see Mac and Rachel together...most times Iris.
One of the most notable break-ups was when Mac took Jamie's side about his wife Blaine, who Rachel considered a scheming, manipulative young woman, who was going to make her son's life miserable.  Rachel "cut off" Jamie, Mac got mad and got involved with Janice Frame.  Mac and Rachel divorced and Rachel kept Amanda.  Mac was so upset that he had Jamie kidnap Amanda, but then Mac had a change of heart and gave Amanda back to Rachel, who gave Mac full visitation rights.  Janice and Mac married, then Mitch Blake, Janice's "old flame" showed up.  Rachel flirted with Mitch, hoping a jealous Janice would leave Mac for Mitch.
Well, it almost worked.  Janice wanted Mac's money and Mitch's body. So she started carrying out a plot she read in a disregarded manuscript from Cory Publishing, called "Harry Must Die," about a woman who slowly poisoned her husband to death.  Janice told Mitch her plan, then started poisoning Mac.  Rachel and Liz became suspicious, joined forces, found the manuscript, and realized what Janice was doing.  Rachel learned that Janice had taken Mac to St. Croix "to rest."  Rachel went to St. Croix, found Mitch and seduced him so he would lead her to Janice and Mac.  Rachel found Mac "near death;" struggled with Janice, who had a knife, in the swimming pool, and ultimately stabbed Janice who died instantly.

Mac and Rachel went back to Bay City and were remarried.  All's well ... well not exactly.  Rachel ended up pregnant...with Mitch's child and Mitch confronted her in the stables.  Rachel shot and wounded Mitch, left the stables.  A prowler came in and Mitch shot him but the bullet hit a wire and started a fire.  Mitch escaped but had amnesia, so he wandered away.  Rachel was booked for the second degree murder of Mitch Blake.  In court, it's discovered that the poison Janice gave Mac made him sterile so he cannot be the baby's father.  Rachel admitted that the baby was Mitch's. Rachel was afraid that Mac would leave but he stayed and said he would raise the baby as his own.  Rachel was convicted and sent to prison.  Ada's husband, Charlie Hobson, died and Rachel attended the funeral to be with her mother.  Rachel escaped, found Mitch and brought him back so she could win her freedom.
Mitch wanted to see "his son," this put stress on Rachel and Mac.  Rachel fell for Mitch and divorced Mac.  Mac got engaged to Alice Matthews, until Steve Frame came "back from the dead" and Alice broke off the engagement to Mac.  Alice and Steve were to be married but Rachel separated them.  Then Rachel and Steve were to be married, but the night before the wedding, there's a terrible car crash.  Steve was dead and Rachel was blind.  Mac befriended Rachel by pretending to be an Englishman named John Caldwell, until one day Rachel's eyesight returned and she told Mac he could stop pretending to be English.
Then Mac had a plane crash and was presumed dead. Rachel searched and found Mac.  Mac suffered a stroke.  Then Carl Hutchins came to Bay City.  Carl hated Mac because in New York, Carl convinced his father to sell their family business to Mac, when the father realized that he could have gotten ten times the amount that Mac paid, he committed suicide.  Carl blamed Mac and vowed to ruin him.  Carl bought KBAY and held Mac hostage there.  He tried to get Mac to shoot himself, like Carl's father had done, but police arrived in time.  Then Carl confronted Mac once again and tried to shoot him, but shot Rachel instead, who got amnesia and didn't remember Mac for awhile, but eventually regained her memory.
Then there was a take-over attempt at Cory Publishing.  It turned out to be Iris, and Mac wrote her off.  It was time to celebrate Cory Publishing's 25th anniversary.  Lots of friends from the "old days" came back to help celebrate.  Everyone except Mac.  He went out of town to come to terms with Iris' betrayal since she was the one behind the recent take-over attempt.  While out of town, Mac suffered a heart attack and died.  He left equal shares of Cory Publishing to Rachel, Iris, and Amanda; although, later the will was rendered invalid and the revised version did not provide for Iris.
Douglass Watson who portrayed Mac Cory died in 1989.  Rather than replacing the actor, it was decided to have Mac die as well.  After all, Douglass Watson is, was, and will always be...Mac Cory.  Mac was survived by his wife, Rachel; his daughters Iris and Amanda, and (later to be discovered as his daughter) Paulina; his sons Sandy and Matthew and step-son Jamie.  Mac Cory stayed a part of Another World even though he hadn't been alive for ten years.  The last image of the last episode of Another World was of Mac...as it should have been.  A world-class man toasting a world-class soap!
